2016 Golden Globes

My favorite time of year is officially HERE. It’s red carpet season, friends…and we’re kicking things off on a high note with the 2016 Golden Globes. Who wore what? Who shouldn’t have worn what? Let’s dig in…

I was feeling quite indecisive with my best dressed picks, as they almost seem like they shouldn’t be amazing (like you could consider this a collection of gauze and lace made into a gown or you can consider it a piece of art, just like all things Alexander McQueen). This is one where you have to appreciate fashion to appreciate this dress. It’s not traditionally pretty but I still dig it. Even better? That warrior braid. The contrast of her strong hair with this [sort of] feminine dress is SPOT ON.

She’s so happy to be wearing this dress, you couldn’t hate it if you tried!

I’m always biased towards pants on the red carpet. ALWAYS. I’d wear this in a second. Thakoon, want to make a custom suit for me too? K thanks.

Hmm what to do with a fully gold sequin dress (composed of sequins that look like they’re on steroids) — a) pair with statement earrings b) style with statement heels, c) add a white cape, d) all of the above (WRONG REGINA!) or e) none of the above. Capes were all the rage on last night’s red carpet. It’s almost like Regina got word ahead of time and forced her stylist to sew a piece of fabric onto the back of her dress in the limo ride there.

Melissa McCarthy

How is it that she designed her own dress and this is the best she’s ever looked? I could do without that long necklace and would prefer a slightly smaller clutch (but that’s a stylist’s job, not the designer’s). Overall, though, I say HELL YES MELISSA.

Rachel McAdams in Lanvin

Such a great idea to repurpose your Christmas tree skirt for a red carpet dress. Who doesn’t love a good two-fer?!

This dress could look cool on the right girl but unfortunately Maggie Gyllenhaal is not doing this any justice.

Oh wow a strapless peplum?! MIND. BLOWN.

Remember when she used to wear meat and enter a room in an egg and that was totally normal? Now she’s like actually normal and honestly, I’m kind of bored. But regardless, the dress fits perfectly so I must applaud her for that, however…I’m still bored.

Looks like Armani Prive, no? If Tom Ford is only going to dress one person for an awards show, you’d hope it screams TOM FORD.

It’s not easy to make a black dress look exciting on the red carpet and although this doesn’t have a ton of crazy embellishments and detail, it’s the ropes holding it all together that really do it for me. And if you’re not excited from the front, just wait until you see the back. The perfect example of less really is more.

Katy Perry in Prada

A Bump-It should never be paired with Prada. EVER.

Damn I hope I look this good in Lanvin when I’m 54…

There was no shortage of plunging necklines last night and with Jaimie being one of the first to arrive on the red carpet, she really set the bar high for this trend. I’ve never seen anything like this at an awards show, which definitely says something. It wasn’t my favorite dress of the night but I’m into it.

photo Amanda Peet in Alexander McQueen.jpg

Amanda Peet in Alexander McQueen

There’s many times I’ve written red carpet posts here where I mention a dress I don’t love or feel indifferent about, but because of the girl that’s wearing it, I fall in love with the entire look. It’s the girl that makes the dress. Now take the opposite of that thought process and that’s how I feel about Amanda Peet. She’s really pretty so I don’t understand why I feel this way but everything she wears always seems a bit awkward and just not right (even if I like the dress). This is only one of many examples. Don’t believe me? Search “Amanda Peet” here on CCF. You’ll see what I mean.

Oh is that JLo? Sorry I didn’t recognize her without being basically naked covered in rhinestones. Although I do appreciate the different direction, I’m just not feeling this specific dress. She does look amazing (re: opposite of Amanda Peet) but I think too many people wore the cape look on the red carpet last night and by the time we got to Jenny, I was over it (unfortunate, too, because I LOVE a good cape).

Jada Pinkett Smith in Versace

Speaking of capes (and horrible matching green shoes…)

It seems like we’ve seen this dress a million times. Oh wait, that’s because this is the only dress Zac Posen ever designs. So, yes. We have seen this dress a million times.

People have compared this dress to a milkmaid, an apron, and a pinafore…and when I saw a photo of her twirling, I immediately thought of the blinds in my living room. Now these all sound like bad things but somehow they end up being awesome? Most definitely one of those I just love her and she looks incredible in everything sort of situations (plus the cross back detail is just the finishing touch that gives this an extra something).

This is not an easy color to wear and I cannot recommend wearing it in gown form (especially one with extra embellishments). Sorry JP but this is not your finest moment.

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy

I know I should love this because it’s such a fashion moment on the red carpet…which we don’t get very often and I so appreciate when we do. However, this is a little more fashun than fashion. If it were in black, white or cream I might actually be obsessed with this but the fact that something with this much going on is also baby pink…I don’t think I can get behind that. Also hate the hair. But normally love what she wears on the red carpet (especially when it’s Givenchy…remember the 2011 Oscars?) Although apparently I’m not a fan of her light pink Givenchy choices (re: the 2014 SAG Awards).

You know those eveningwear boutiques where your mom used to shop for those fancy occasions (and your grandmother probably still shops there…as it’s the only place in town with fully beaded separates)? That’s what this reminds me of…and it’s even worse that she paid for it (yes she bought this dress…who needs a stylist when you have a Neimans card?!)

 photo Caitriona Balfe .jpg

Caitriona Balfe in Alexander McQueen

Is she not Bella Hadid fast forward a few years? (quite a compliment as they’re both STUNNING). This basically looks like the fanciest nightie I’ve ever seen…and thats why I adore it.

If you couldn’t get enough pockets, deep V necklines, shades of yellow, cape silhouettes and white dresses (re: all of last night’s trends) then be on the look out for part two…coming soon! In the mean time, be sure to let me know your best and worst dressed picks in the comments.
