Alexander Wang Does US Proud

Move over Marant, it’s Wang’s turn for some H&M love. If you haven’t heard the news, H&M announced at Coachella this weekend that Alexander Wang would be their next designer collaboration. Now, a high/low collab is barely news any more, but there’s something extra special about this one…

Ever notice what the past H&M collaborations have had in common? Think — Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, Lanvin, Isabel Marant…they’re all international designers. Alexander Wang x H&M is the first time the Swedish fast-fashion store has collaborated with an American designer. With these collections being so popular in the states, it’s kind of hard to believe this is the first US designer to partake in one of these collaborations but hey…there’s a first time for everything. And not only is Mr. Wang the first American designer but he’s also the youngest (he is just 30 after all). Can you imagine making some of the country’s most coveted designs, being asked to collaborate with H&M and being the youngest person to ever do so? That’s pretty bad ass.

But what does this mean for the collection? As H&M has continued to do, it will consist of both menswear and womenswear as well as accessories for both (H&M version of  the Diego bag perhaps?) Besides that though, I read an interesting quote from Alexander Wang stating that because these collaborations have been done so many times (this will be H&M’s 10th year doing these capsule collections by the way) he wanted to do something different. He says “It will be a new take on a lifestyle offering. It’s a little early [to talk about it] but it’s a completely new take on how they do collaborations.” Alex, you can’t leave us hanging like this. I have so many questions! Will the collection be permanent? Could it be sold on his e-commerce site along with being in H&M stores? Can we expect Alexander Wang Objects x H&M as well? Will A. Wang himself hang out with me if I buy the entire collection? Considering the partnership was announced only a few days ago, we won’t know the answers to these for quite some time (the collection hits stores November 6) but we can still ponder, right?

Very curious to see how this one pans out, especially because these other designer collaborations have all been with “high end” designers, while Alexander Wang is known to be more “contemporary.” Will that have any affect on the H&M price? We’ll see. But now it’s your turn to weigh in — What do you think Alexander Wang will do to make this collaboration different (if anything at all)? Tell me your thoughts, and if you just can’t wait ’til 11/6, here’s some regular Alex Wang for you to shop for in the mean time (that may just show up in a different form on 11/6)…

Really gives #TotesWang a whole new meaning.
