Should You Get Bangs?

Bangs are one of those things that we all have debated getting at some point in our lives. Many of us have gone through with it, some may have kept them with hopes they’d get easier to maintain, and most of us have given up. But as fashion trends come and go, the same goes for beauty. Every couple of years it seems like everyone is getting bangs…and you know once Beyonce does something, the world will follow.

Now Beyonce went a specific direction with her bangs — those short, choppy bangs which I will never ever understand. I get it’s a thing but what I don’t get is why you’d want it to look like a child cut your hair with one hand and a dull pair of scissors. But that’s just me. So after Beyonce, came Gaga (although you never know with her…could always be a wig). Now I’m curious to see if this will spark another bangs craze and if so, will they be this specific style of what I like to call “oh shit bangs” (because it looks like your hair stylist made a mistake, which makes you go OH SHIT!) or if they will be regular (dare I say basic) good old fashioned bangs.

My relationship with bangs is not a positive one. I’ve had them two or three times in my life — once as a kid (I only remember due to photos), I think once in my early teens (which I can’t remember because I don’t recall any photos but perhaps that’s a good thing) and in college (epic mistake, see below). Deciding to get bangs is a big decision because they are always extra maintenance (more or less depending on what type of hair you have). I like my beauty routine to be as little work as possible so I’m hoping I learned after the third time that bangs aren’t for me (I also have a prominent cowlick right in the front so I really just shouldn’t be allowed to get bangs ever again…like it should actually be outlawed).

However, if I knew I’d look like Suki Waterhouse with bangs…that’s an entirely different story. I can’t think of anyone who rocks them better than she does. Getting your bangs to do what hers do is like finding Alaia at 90% off — a rare gem.

So if you’re thinking about chopping off the front of your hair with hopes of a good bang (haha get it?) just make sure you’re willing to commit to the extra styling time, if you’ve had bangs before remember how annoying it is to grow them out, and if you opt for the “oh shit bangs” and you hate them, growing those out will be that much worse. BUT know that there is a chance you could get Suki bangs…and that’s like winning the bangs lottery.

What are your thoughts on bangs? Do you have them? Would you ever pull a Beyonce with your bangs? Do you have any bad bangs stories? (let’s keep it classy, people) Any other celebs you think rock bangs better than Suki? (must back this up with solid evidence) Okay I’ll stop asking questions now…your turn to answer.

  1. I can remember having bangs about 5 years ago. It was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. The little hairs constantly scratching my eyelids drove me nuts!!!! Not to mention I went with a darker hue for this particular style. I felt like Morticia from the Addams family.(EWW) HOWEVER, I’ve also tried a side bang and really loved it. It’s easy to tuck away in a pony if u just need a break from whipping your neck trying to keep ur “new bang” out of your face.

  2. While I can’t deny that I have a certain affinity for Zoe Deschannel (sp?) type bangs, I haven’t had them since the 7th grade and don’t plan to have them ever again. To me, they’re too… specific of a look.
