British Fashion Awards Red Carpet

Every year, I get crazy excited for the CFDA Awards because it’s sort of like the Met Ball’s more casual little sister — everyone is fashion is there and the looks are anything but boring (unlike the Oscars). Now the CFDA is really only about American designers / American fashion  (it does stand for Council of Fashion Designers of AMERICA, after all), so what about the rest of the world? You know my obsession with British designers (and and accents) so let’s celebrate the British Fashion Awards that occurred just yesterday by judging the red carpet.

Cara Delevingne

Cara Delevingne in Burberry

It’s so hard to judge models because [duh] they always look amazing…it’s sort of their job. Is this a groundbreaking look? No. But the fit is perfect, she looks damn good and it all worked out well because she won model of the year yet again (she won in 2012 as well).

victoria beckham

Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham

Another winner of the night (she took home brand of the year), it’s sort of ballsy to wear a sweater to this sort of thing but I think it all came together. I don’t love the skirt on its own but she’s one of those people that can wear something I don’t love and make me not totally hate it. And that’s winning in my book.

rihanna

Rihanna in Stella McCartney

Although she’s not a model, Rihanna is one of the lucky few who can literally wear anything and make it look cool…but I’m not sure if this falls in that category. I love what she wears 90% of the time, and the other 10% it’s like I get where you’re trying to go with this but where the hell are you going with this? I realize the blazer is supposed to be oversized, but it just looks ill-fitting and that she forgot her pants. And tights with open toe shoes? WHAT IS HAPPENING?

emma watson

Emma Watson in a Dior blazer and Misha Nonoo jumpsuit

And the British Style Award goes to…this girl. Are you surprised? She single handedly made me love single earrings and for that, I thank you Emma (I also thank you for rocking Uggs in The Bling Ring). It is not easy to make a long, slightly oversized jacket like this work with wide leg pants but with the cinch at the waist and rolled up sleeves, it’s just those little touches that perfect this outfit. That award is well deserved!

karlie kloss

Karlie Kloss in Nicholas Oakwell Couture

I haven’t been loving what Karlie’s been wearing on the red carpet lately but this seems to be a step in the right direction…which is shocking because I typically hate this material BUT very (emphasis on very) few times it is done well and can look stunning. This is one of those times. It’s that perfect champagne color that drapes just right. The train is a nice touch, I love the low back, can’t decide how I feel about the tassel but overall BRAVO.

kendall jenner

Kendall Jenner in Pucci

You know when you watch Top Chef and sometimes the most simple, well-executed dish is the winner? Well this is like that…but with a jumpsuit. At the end of the day, it’s a strapless jumpsuit and heels. Not that exciting. But when it comes to the fit (spot on), the make up (killin’ it) and the unexpected sheerness in the shoes (brilliant…see my Britishness there?) it’s the simplicity that makes it great. And this is all regardless of the fact that I love her (sorry other models), and because of this I love her even more.

anna kendrick

Anna Kendrick in Victoria Beckham

This was disappointing because I love VB but at first sight, I thought this was Herve Leger (in my world, that’s not a compliment). A fitted strapless dress and pointed toe pumps? With simplicity working in Kendall’s favor, it’s working against Anna. Because simple can be boring…and this is pretty fucking boring.

bee shaffer & anna wintour

Bee Shaffer in Alexander McQueen & Anna Wintour in John Galliano for Maison Martin Margiela

In red carpets past, Bee always seems really uncomfortable in what she’s wearing (which makes sense…she’s been very open about how she’s not that into fashion) but this is definitely a step in the right direction. Added bonus that she’s wearing the recipient of this year’s red carpet designer award. It’s a super cool dress, those shoes are unreal so it’s kind of hard to mess this one up. Anna made a statement by supporting John Galliano (which not many have done since the incident) and to do so on the night where she received the outstanding achievement award…is kind of a big deal.

suki waterhouse

Suki Waterhouse in Burberry

I am team Suki all the way (although I don’t know what the opposing team would be?) but I can’t get behind this. — a popped collar with ruffles, pleats AND ombre…AND ankle straps? It’s all just too much. I also hate the hair.

ellie goulding

Ellie Goulding in Roland Mouret

Remember when we talked about perfect fit with Cara and Kendall? This is the opposite.

lilly allen

Lily Allen in Vivienne Westwood

I can never get behind that “train attached to a short dress” kind of look…it’s like the high/low trend but worse. Love the shoes though.

rita ora

Rita Ora in Tom Ford

It’s very Taylor Momsen hooker chic (but Rita’s more chic and less hooker). Although not full-on tights (just thigh highs), I just don’t understand pairing them with open-toe shoes (re: Rihanna). From the waist-up, though, this is pretty fantastic.

alexa chung

Alexa Chung in Emilia Wickstead

Quintessential Alexa Chung.

poppy delevingne

Poppy Delevingne in Topshop

I loved this from the front, but the side shot is a little figure skater for my taste. I dig the hair though.

joan smalls

Joan Smalls in Tom Ford

It’s known that Tom Ford only dresses one person per event so I’m curious to see if he changed his mind for this one or someone pulled a Hayden Panettiere at the Golden Globes and actually purchased their Tom Ford dress. Between Rita and Joan, they’re both pretty scandalous (in a good way) but I have to give the top half win to Rita and the bottom half win to Joan. It’s only fair.

A few other shotouts to the winners from last night — Prism for Emerging Accessory Designer (and for showing up on my face), Simone Rocha for New Establishment Designer, Anya Hindmarch for Accessory Designer (I give her one thumb up), J.W. Anderson for Menswear Designer and Erdem for Womenswear Designer.

Do you have any favorite looks from last night’s British Fashion Awards red carpet?
