The Perfect Tan

Chestnut, tan, caramel, light brown, camel…whatever you want to call it, when it comes to outerwear, it doesn’t get more basic than this (and not in a bad way). Camel coats are in no way a trend, but it seems their popularity has been at an all time high as of late…and not just on the runways.

It’s like getting a perfect tan with no sun (although I do really enjoy the sun…)

I hate to say it but Kim Kardashian may or may not be responsible for this outerwear outbreak. Just hear me out first.

Ever since Kanye came in the picture, her style has become much more refined (although still maintaing her reputation in too-tight clothing…now they’re just Givenchy instead of Herve Leger) but it’s looks like this that make her some sort of new “style icon,” which you can agree with or disagree with but regardless, it’s still happening (and I don’t think I’ve accepted it yet). BUT it’s not like North’s mom is solely responsible for these neutral coats.

I’m thinking this might stem from the whole Normcore phenomenon and how we seem to be going back to basics. One of the most popular camel coat pairings I’ve seen is with white sneakers (which, remember, are seasonless). Or just sneakers in general…

Which I dig. I like the contrast of the elegant tan coat with the casual footwear. But I have to be honest, though, when it comes to neutrals I’m strictly a grey and black girl. I never buy things in the tan/brown category because subconsciously I feel like I associate it with being preppy (like a tan trench coat or chestnut colored riding boots…which aren’t really my style). However, a few years ago I came across this amazing camel swing coat by The Row that was way out of my price range but I was absolutely in love. I’ve never felt this way about anything this color but I think just seeing the quality of the fabric, the loose shape (my favorite!) and just the right shade of tan that wouldn’t completely wash me out really sold me. And what just so happened to be so very on sale just a few months later in one size that happened to be mine? That. Very. Same. Coat. So I guess you can say I’m a camel convert. Regardless of how much you pay for one, they always seem more polished and sophisticated (even more than a black or grey coat) so like I mentioned, I love the juxtaposition with something casual like sneakers, but you can always dress them up a bit with heels or ankle boots.

If you need even more camel coat inspiration, you should check out the street style from Russia Fashion Week (they were all over the streets of Moscow) and if you’re in the market for some new outerwear (whether it be a wrap coat, cape, blanket coat, trench, whatever), here’s a few of my favorite tan coats you can buy RIGHT NOW.

What do you think caused the sudden interest in camel coats? Do you own one currently? If so, how do you like to wear it? If not, will you be buying one this season?
