Throwback Thursday: The Going Out Top

Remember some time ago (sadly, not too long ago) where looking tacky was actually “in”? Like the sparklier, the strappier, the better? Yeah…let’s go back to that time for a sec.

Going out tops crack me up because I always remember thinking to myself, I need more going out tops yet they were popular when I was like 16. Where the hell was I “going out” when I was 16? I don’t need a satin sweetheart neckline tank to hang with my friends at the mall…but clearly I totally did. They, unfortunately, were still sort of a thing in my early college years. So of course you need plenty of going out tops for that (although that was during the time where the “going out bubble hem dress” really shined). But what happened to said going out top? I mean…we still go out. So what are we wearing on top? Before we get to that. Let’s reminisce about what we used to wear.

A small shiny piece fabric was the ultimate going out top (as long as you didn’t live with your parents…) and especially if your idea of going out was to da club.

Ideally, your going out top would be as short as possible and your jeans would be as low as possible (again…as long as you didn’t live with your parents).

Now if you did live with your parents, thankfully Jessica Simpson showed us that there are more…”tasteful”…going out tops.

If your going out top also showed off your belly button ring, your night was pretty much going to be the best ever.

No one wore more going out tops than Paris Hilton…probably because no one went out more than Paris Hilton.

The O.C. was the most fashionable show at one point in time…now it’s fun to look back at all that ruching, bad flare jeans (why I was hesitant to flare in 2015 but you find a way around it), and wearing said jeans with extra pointy pumps….and still obsess over Seth Cohen.

Laguna Beach was a close second, in terms of fashionable shows of the mid-2000s, and more relatable because it was SO REAL. Not going to lie…I think I had this exact shirt at one point…and probably wore it this same way.

Going out tops + unflattering flares = #goals

RIP pre-surgery Heidi. We’ll always remember you…in this going out top.

And just for the hell of it…I couldn’t find any really good going out tops (probably because the height of their popularity occurred before I ever owned a digital camera) but here’s a pretty solid option, taken on my 18th birthday. Sorry to everyone else in this photo. We all have style regrets…most of them occurred in 2006.

Ironically, we haven’t totally learned our lesson when it comes to these hideous pieces of clothing. As seen in Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s new clothing collection (the corset top offends me much more than the cropped…at least that one could go a little Calvin Klein circa 1999).

Things have gotten better, though, but sometimes they’re pretty close to crossing that line…back into the early / mid 2000s. Like this photo was not taken in 2004, FYI.

So like I said…we still go out, what do we wear? It seems to be whatever is on trend. It was peplum at one point. Now it’s off-the-shoulder. We can probably throw swing tops in there as well.

Of course bra / crop tops are still strong. I have no idea if we’ll look back on 2015 and be like WHAT THE FUCK WERE WE THINKING? But…in the mean time, enjoy your 2015 versions of going out tops. And regardless of what you do when you go out…be safe and make good [fashion] choices. Hopefully these will help 🙂

In the words of my girl, Maura — long live the going out top.
