Flair For Your Hair

Remember decorating your hair with clips, pins, headbands and pretty much anything you could find at Claire’s…and it was so awesome? Well, you’re going to get to relive those days, although the hair accessory department has gotten much more chic since then…

When it comes to hair, I keep it pretty simple. I wear it the same way just about everyday — down with my natural waves + a few extras thrown in there with a curling wand. This isn’t because I don’t like other hair styles, but I really just have zero skills when it comes to hair (makeup as well…but that’s another story for another day). So what to do when you want to change things up? DECORATE THOSE STRANDS.

Hair accessories seem to be something we don’t take into consideration very often — it’s either jewelry or a hat…rarely “jewelry for our hair.” But sometimes it’s fun to think outside the box and try something you don’t see everyday. Whether it’s a skinny gold headband (which I’m suddenly really into after writing this post), barrettes or a unique hair tie, there’s so many ways to incorporate hair accessories. You can go minimal like Lupita…

Or all out like Emmy…

Or somewhere in between. Regardless, you can make it work to fit your style.

Now why the sudden interest in hair accessories? It’s not like we’re seeing a ton of them on all of the runways, but I guess I became a little interested this time last year when I picked up this Dion Lee X Sarah & Sebastian headpiece in Sydney. I had just never seen a headband that rests on the back of your head like that, so I thought I would give it a shot. After a round at Coachella and back home again, my interest in hair accessories resurfaced (and I hadn’t really thought about them since Y2K).

In the mean time, of course, we’ve seen celebrities on the red carpet rocking some hair decor, like Emma Stone at the Golden Globes…

As well as a few runway appearances, like at Celine Spring 2015 (as well as many of the most recent couture shows).

Regardless of all that, I sort of forgot about hair accessories (as I haven’t been able to wear that Dion Lee piece for a while…beanies have taken over my life since September) until season four of Girls premiered. It was like the entire cast was on this hair accessory kick…especially Shoshanna, but of course her hair game would be spot on.

So between Girls, the couture shows, and even a 90s bobby pin revival at Isa Arfen Fall ’15 just this past weekend, it seems that hair accessories are making a comeback…but thankfully not in that #trendsontrendsontrends kind of way (at least not yet, so embrace them now!)

Like I said, there’s many ways you can go about this, and you don’t have to channel your inner Blair Waldorf (unless you’d like to of course) to participate. Personally, I’ve only done headbands of some sort as of late (meaning in the last couple of years)…

But I’m thinking some cool hair pins or barrettes are in my near future (and if I have to create a Kickstarter to be able to get myself these KDIA gold and ruby hair pins, I will).

What are your thoughts on hair accessories? Do you wear them now? Do you think you will? And I realize we’re going to have to wear beanies and other warm hats for at least another couple of months…but thinking about letting those locks out, and sprucing them up with some of these sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it?
