Sleepwear or Ready-To-Wear

It’s about that time again…the only time of year appropriate to gift an adult a stuffed animal or a box of chocolates so big, it’s actually unsafe for a single human to consume, and we can’t forget about that ridiculous color scheme of pink and red (which only Emma Stone can pull off) — yes, it’s almost Valentine’s Day. Whether you’ll be hitting up Bumble hard this weekend or you’ll being enjoying a quiet night with your man friend of many years (guilty), here’s something we can all enjoy (and not just on February 14).

I’ve never been all that into lingerie but I’ve taken more of an interest as of late. I still sleep in very unsexy sweatshirts and sweatpants (or t-shirts and shorts in the summer) but every once in a while I’ll throw in some nice silk PJs and although they feel great, I’m still so used to my sweatsuits (although not of this variety). BUT this post isn’t about lingerie to impress your man (or wo-man, depending on your preference), it’s about how to incorporate sleepwear into your ready-to-wear (without looking like a going out top from 2005).

I was inspired to write this post for a few reasons — the latest reason would be a Kardashian (just hear me out!) Monica Rose (who is responsible for so many ridiculously good outfits seen on Kendall and Gigi to name a few…wonder if she styles them for the gym too?) recently dressed Khloe in this House of CB robe…and I didn’t realize until I actually checked it out online (yes, I’m actually thinking about buying it), it’s an actual silk robe (not a robe coat). So now I’m like, “okay…go on…”

The first time I started to take note of lingerie as ready to wear was at Louis Vuitton Fall 2013. Marc Jacobs sent slip dresses paired with fabulous outerwear down the runway (and even closed the show in his own chic pajamas). And there was something super glamorous about it that I was just drawn to.

The whole vibe actually reminded me of Jennifer Garner in 13 Going on 30. Do you really think she’d be able to get away with lingerie at the office if this look wasn’t socially acceptable? I know she scrambled to get out of her apartment to avoid her hunky boyfriend she didn’t know she had, but sometimes it’s the last minute plans that work out the best!

Yes, I realize that’s a movie and Louis Vuitton is…well, Louis Vuitton (and neither of which are reality for most of us) BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t try it yourself!

You don’t literally have to wear La Perla or Kiki de Montparnasse. Layering is key when it comes to lingerie-inspired looks…and I promise you, if I can [sort of] do it. You can too.

If that hasn’t convinced you enough yet…see how these designers took this trend to the next level for spring ’16 (I realize that seems so last season with the fall collections debuting today…but we still have plenty of time for spring trends).

Slip dressing is always a good idea, a la Celine. It’s definitely too cold to wear a slip dress on its own right now, so you can always do a sweater over dress (which you know I love) or wear with tights / leather pants. Although not sexy in anyway, layering with a t-shirt is a fresh way to rock it too.

Balenciaga giving a new meaning to the built-in-bra (can also achieve this look by simply wearing a solid bra, with a see-through or lacey top).

The going out top remixed for 2016 at Chloe. Now would I recommend wearing this specific outfit on a first date? Probably not (I’d wait until at least date number five…then you know you’ve sealed the deal).

We’ve seen plenty of bra tops the last few years, but we’ve never seen it like Dries. Instead of pairing them with your high waisted skirt (re: Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and everyone at a music festival), here’s a cool new way to try it.

And take note from Alexander McQueen, a little peek never hurt anyone 😉

Now if some of this seems intimidating, don’t you worry…because you can always just wear pajamas!

Would you wear lingerie as ready-to-wear? Whether it’s an inspired piece (like this) or something you’d actually find in the lingerie department (like this)? If your answer is yes to either question, let me know how’d you style it. And if you’re like been there, done that…Jena! then tell me how you’ve worn this trend in the past (preferably post 2010). If you can’t even imagine wearing such things outside the bedroom, feel free to let it out in the comments.

And if you’re looking for actually cool lingerie / lingerie-inspired pieces (so those of us that wouldn’t dare step inside a Victoria’s Secret), here’s a few of my favorites.
