Top Coat

You guys…I think we made it. According to the ten day forecast, it looks like we can put away our puffer coats (although I don’t think they’re all that bad) and opt for something a bit lighter. I’m not saying it’s t-shirt / leather jacket time just yet, but I’m feeling optimistic here (which is rare for me this early in the year). If you’re excited to lighten up (whether by color or by weight of your outerwear), then you’re going to enjoy this.

I used to loathe outerwear because I thought of it as purely function, not fashion, and it’s always the sign of freezing cold. In Chicago, that freezing cold lasts for quite some time…so you and your outerwear become VERY close. Closer than you’d ever wish to be with any garment. When it warms up a bit, though, you don’t have to worry about your coat protecting you from negative temperatures…it’s really just something you have to cover up a bit. And those pieces of outerwear, my friends, are my absolute favorite. Having one less worry (and that worry being FREEZING MY ASS OFF) makes getting dressed a hell of a lot easier.

One of my biggest complaints about Chicago (and I know I’m not the only one) is that we have two seasons — summer and winter (also known as construction and frigid). For fashion, it’s all about spring and fall, which we barely get. My favorite part about those seasons are jackets and lighter coats. They become part of your outfit, instead of something you can’t wait to take off when you get inside. Overall, I just find them more enjoyable to wear. The problem is I NEVER GET TO WEAR THEM. With this surprisingly good forecast though, these coats are going to get some major action…enough to make your shearling jealous.

When you think of “spring jackets” they tend to be on the short side, but lately we’ve had a ton of long options that I almost prefer over the short (unless the short is leather, of course). Whatever you fancy, you can go in so many directions…which is why I’m so damn excited about this! Bomber, trench, varsity, duster, belted, fringebright, pastel, neutral…WHERE TO EVEN BEGIN? Well, here’s a start…
