OOTD: Outfit Of The [Holi]Day

Besides the insane holiday marketing that is the 55 days of Christmas, I told myself I wouldn’t be one of those “holiday pushers” who throws a 300 item gift guide in your face as you put your Halloween costume away. With the day we give thanks and stuff ourselves like the birds we eat (which may not apply to those who opt for a Tofurky) being exactly one week from today, I thought it was about time for my first official holiday post of the season. Those parties are approaching…and you don’t want to be another basic bitch in sparkly dress now do you?

unique holiday outfit ideas

I didn’t think so. Not saying there aren’t some cool sparkly dresses out there, but why not take your holiday dressing to the next level this year? Here’s five ideas to get your juices egg nog flowing.

CULOTTES:

how to wear culottes

Culottes can go super casual or in this case, be the perfect piece to kick off your holiday wardrobe (although you can really wear these beyond your office holiday party). When it comes to holiday dressing, I do appreciate the typical burgundy / deep green / metallic hues but you can always play it safe in black OR make a statement in winter white. Either way, if we’re forced to get bundled, we may as well show off those ankles while we can!

METALLIC SEPARATES:

If you love anything shiny and look forward to that prime time between Thanksgiving and January 1 where all things shiny are extra appropriate, then give your sequin dress a break and go for metallic separates. If you really want to be all in, a metallic suit would be pretty amazing, but a gold jacket or skirt will do just fine too!

JUMPSUIT:

Going along with the culottes comments, you can always stick to your basic hues when it comes to holiday jumpsuit-ing, but the real winner is in those winter whites. Can you imagine showing up to that fancy holiday party wearing a long sleeve white jumpsuit?! Even Joan Rivers would salute you! But then there’s people like me who love red wine and red sauce, who fear outfits like this…based on those four horrid words you never want to hear from the dry cleaner — “it won’t come out.” And for us, there are black / dark colored jumpsuits that are still way cooler than your average holiday look. Regardless of your color preference, a jumpsuit equals an automatic win.

VELVET SUIT

If a one-piece wonder isn’t your thing, and texture is definitely your thing — drape yourself in velvet with a velvet suit. I raved about the material just a few weeks ago so I won’t repeat myself too much but this is [in my opinion] the coolest holiday outfit ever. So if we happen to be at the same party and I see you in a velvet suit…I’ll be following you around all night (don’t say I didn’t warn you).

SHIRT UNDER DRESS

This one is probably the most unconventional of the five, as we don’t see this very often in life (at least in Chicago) so most definitely not at a holiday party. So why not be [one of the] the first in your ‘hood to rock this? Plus, you can get more use out of your sleeveless / strapless dresses that you thought you could never wear in fall / winter…BUT HEY, now you can!

What do you think of these holiday outfit ideas? Any you’ve tried in the past? Were they a success? Major failure? Either way I have to hear about it. And be sure to share your own holiday outfit ideas in the comments!

  1. The only thing I can’t get on board with is culottes. They just look undeniably weird to me. I far prefer an A-line skirt to them. But the other 4 are great–I just saw a really great velvet jacket at H&M that I’m considering purchasing for the holidays.

  2. I personally adore the velvet suit! I don’t know why, it just looks so comfy and luxurious at the same time 🙂

I would recommend you take a look at the new online fashion marketplace called Stylewhile. They have very edgy and modern fashion and you can style your own outfits on a doll. It’s very fun 🙂
