Trend Alert: Fur (lots and lots of it)

Whether it’s a coat, a shawl, fur trim, a hat or even shoes…fur is EVERYWHERE on the runways for Fall 2010. The best part is (unlike the Spring trends) you don’t have to wait to wear it! If you’re in the 49 out of 50 states that have had snow this winter, get excited for this trend…it’s in now and will be in the fall. Whether it’s real fur or faux fur (I prefer faux) there is a look for everyone of all styles and budgets.

I’m not exaggerating when I say fur has showed up in almost every collection for the Fall 2010 RTW runways. Fur has been showing up in expected places (coats and shawls) and unexpected places (purses and shoes). This trend has also been shown in the expected colors (blacks, browns, beiges, etc.) and unexpected colors (reds, purples and blues). How exciting?!

Here are just a few (of the many) fur looks shown on the runways just this past week at New York Fashion Week:

As you can see, this trend is quite versatile and can show up in almost any wardrobe staple (and even shoes according to Zac Posen). Unlike most trends, fur will never go out of style. Trends come and go and although fur is very in right now, it will still be acceptable to wear in 3 years or 20 years. So whether you go real or fake (for money reasons or personal reasons), it’s worth the investment regardless.

**I have the faux fur vest by Rachel Zoe for QVC and it’s amazing. It comes in 3 colors and she just debuted a new faux fur vest that’s a little shorter (yet still very cute!) and this comes in 3 colors as well.

Celeb Style: Lea Michele

This is a special edition of celeb style featuring Red Carpet looks worn by Lea Michele (AKA Rachel Berry from Glee). Her Red Carpet style keeps getting better and better with each awards show or event she attends and she always look flawless. After watching Glee, it was difficult for me to picture her in anything other than a pleated skirt, an argyle sweater and knee-high socks but WOW…she has blown me away with every look (it doesn’t hurt that she has a rockin’ bod too!) I knew I had to feature Lea’s Red Carpet looks because she made my best dressed list 3 times in a row…and that’s a difficult list to make in the first place 🙂

Here are her most recent (and most fabulous Red Carpet looks):

in Romona Keveza at the Grammy Awards

in Catherine Malandrino at the SAG Awards

in Oscar De La Renta at the Golden Globes

in Isaac Mizrahi at the Fox All-Star Party

in Nuj Novakhett at the People’s Choice Awards

——————————————————–

Because I love Lea’s Red Carpet style so much and I know these looks are not affordable to everyone, I decided to seek out a similar dresses to the ones she’s worn so YOU can get her look for less. How exciting?!

Top Row (left to right): Feather Tutu Dress ($235 at oasis.com), Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Ruched Jersey Dress ($110 at nordstrom.com), Nika Strapless Ruffled Evening Gown ($420 at edressme.com)

Bottom Row (left to right): Parachute Dress ($36 at asos.com), French Connection Wizard Cotton Dress ($115 at zappos.com)

ADAM Fall 2010 RTW

Late last fall, in a NYC apartment, I stood mesmerized in front of a painting by Isca Greenfield-Sanders. From her show “Against The Fall,” a play on the words ‘para’ or against, and ‘chute,’ the French word for fall, this work was of a parachute jumper, floating downward through dark yet opaque panels in shades of black. Her experimentation with color, texture, lightness and line inspired the beginning of this Fall 2010 Collection.

This was the front cover of the packet carefully placed on each seat at the ADAM show this past Saturday. The words came from Adam Lippes himself as he explained the inspiration behind his Fall 2010 RTW Collection. There were chunky knits, sequins, lots of amazing outerwear, neutrals, red, and some GREAT dresses. The best part about the collection is that it was wearable yet modern and chic. I would wear any of these pieces in a heartbeat.

Although I truly loved each piece, I had to choose some favorites. Here are my favorite pieces from the ADAM Fall 2010 RTW Collection:

This is not just any ordinary gold dress. The golden-bronzed textured fabric looks amazing at all angles and really makes it stick out from the rest. The cut and shape of the dress is actually one of my favorites to wear. I find this look is glamorous yet hip and paired with the tights; it’s perfect for fall.

I don’t think words can express how much I love this look. I wish someone could have captured my reaction when it walked down the runway because that would best explain it. The dress is simple and absolutely gorgeous and the vest just completes the look. A small thing, like the gold vest, can really make a difference and it clearly pulled together this entire look. Two words: LOVE IT.

I absolutely love the color of this dress. I think it would look great on any skintone. Then pair it with a more casual, neutral jacket spruced up with fur lining? Can you ask for anything better??  One of my favorite runway looks. Ever.

Although I am an avid dress lover, I cannot forget about the separates. I absolutely adore a full skirt because they are fun and flirty. Then Adam comes in and puts a twist on it with a black leather trim and black leather detailing and we take this wardrobe staple to another level. Pairing it with the blazer made the look sophisticated yet feminine and it was absolute perfection. This look is quite versatile. Wear it to work, shopping during the day, or dinner with friends…the possibilities are endless.

I am really big on sheer long sleeves and I love dresses with sequins, shimmer or shine…so basically, this look defines my life. Sheer long sleeves are the best subtle way to be sexy yet stylish. Although I love the sleeves, the dress without them is equally as fabulous. The detailing is impeccable. If/when this dress becomes available, I will be the first to purchase it. You have my word.

Not only was I obsessed with the clothes, I loved the hair and makeup. The messy braid (in many shapes & forms) is very in for spring 2010 and fall 2010 and the neutral makeup was flawless and beautiful. And not only did I love the hair and makeup, I couldn’t stop dancing to the music. I literally had to stop myself because I realized I was the only one bopping around haha. Thanks to my handy iPhone application, Shazam, I found the songs from the show! I highly recommend downloading them. “Psychic City (Voodoo City)” by YACHT and “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” by Saint Etienne.

Alexander [McQueen] The Great

As you have all probably heard, Alexander McQueen passed away today. He was truly one of my favorite designers and this is such a tragic loss. He was a brilliant designer with the most creative mind. His past two runway shows were complete opposites yet equally amazing; Fall 2009 being dark and gothic and his Spring 2010 show being a combination of ocean and space like with a spring twist. I am truly devistated by this lost because we will no longer be able to see these incredible one-of-a-kind ideas walk down the runway again.

I created this collage in honor of McQueen and the amazing work he has done on the runway.

RIP McQueen…you will be missed.

Prabal Gurung Spring 2010 RTW

For debuting his first collection only one year ago at New York Fashion Week, Prabal Gurung has made a name for himself in the fashion world. I’m in love with his Spring 2010 RTW Collection and it is clear this man has amazing construction skills. His pieces are timeless yet modern. Nothing is too over-the-top (think anti Lady Gaga) yet everything still stands out.

Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2010 RTW Collection is composed of many neutrals, some sheer tops, constructed pieces, pops of blue (one of my favorite blues to wear by the way), and a few polka dots here and there and a bow on almost every piece to tie the collection together.

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the collection:

I love this dress because it’s simple yet modern (which goes along perfectly with the collection) and the bow on top of the one shoulder is like icing in the cake; it pulls everything together. This dress can be dressed up or down which I think is very important when it comes to investment pieces. It needs to be versatile so you can get more than one use about it. This dress does just that.

As I mentioned before, the blue that occurs in this collection is so beautiful and it creates that perfect pop of color to spruce up your wardrobe. I love the simple blue dress paired with the more severe black jacket. This is just another way you can do something different with a simple dress. Pair with a fun jacket or a great belt and you have a whole new look.

I love this blue. I love long dresses. I love low backs. This has the entire package. Not only is the back steep and sexy, there is a lot of detailing to appreciate on the bottom. The draping and the bow really make this dress into something more than the ordinary low-back dress. The bright blue doesn’t hurt either…

I think this may be my absolute favorite from the collection. Again, I love the one-shoulder look (VERY in right now…just look at pictures from any recent awards show) and the contrast of the top and bottom makes this dress really stand out. It’s not for everyone, but I love this look of another material (especially feathers) “coming out of” the bottom of the dress. Sometimes it can be too over-the-top but this balances a classic dress with a creative and modern twist.

For only being in the fashion circuit for a year, Prabal Gurung has already been seen on celebrities like Leighton Meester, Demi Moore and Thandie Newton.

I found this video on YouTube that follows Prabal Gurung as he prepares for Fashion Week (from September 2009) that really made me fall in love with him. You can tell he’s very passionate about what he does and he truly appreciates the people who support him, which is always very admirable in a designer.
