Ah, the Met Gala. The most glorious and glamorous night of the year. Who needs actresses in borrowed gowns (re: Oscars) when you have actors / models / singers / designers / socialites / people you’ve never heard of with fabulous names in the most incredible borrowed gowns? Plus, at $25k a ticket you know they’re not going to skimp on accessories. We have a lot of looks to get through so let’s get to it!
Lady Gaga in Balenciaga
I probably should have mentioned that this year’s theme was China: Through The Looking Glass. Of course not every celebrity dresses to the theme but it’s always interesting to see how they interpret it. This looks like something Gaga would wear to lunch with friends so it’s no surprise to see her in something so extravagant. Perfectly her, perfect for the event…no complaints here.
Rachel Weisz in Chanel
Typically for red carpet events, celebrities wear the newest collection or something custom. For this event, it was mostly custom HOWEVER we had a few throwbacks (mostly Chanel) including Rachel’s Spring 2013 couture number. Compared to all the other looks of the night (just you wait and see), this was by far one of the most boring (if not THE most boring). If she had kept it with the top (and even that headpiece) from the runway, I’d have completely different feelings. But hey…not all stylists can be good stylists.
Madonna in Moschino
GO HOME MADONNA.
Julianne Moore in Givenchy
I’ve mentioned several times here on CCF that black dresses can be tough on the red carpet, as they might have some crazy awesome detail that doesn’t always translate in photos. You can tell there’s some cool shit going on here but I have to imagine it’s much more exciting in person.
Emily Ratajkowski in Topshop
Although on theme, it’s a little casual for the event. But the casualist (is that a word? Probably not as there’s currently a red squiggly line under it that you thankfully can’t see) is yet to come.
Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
It took me a few extra seconds to realize this is not a bib necklace (as I would say it could do without). It’s definitely an interesting approach to cut-outs, though, which I appreciate. She killed it when she first hit the red carpet scene a while back, then took quite a plunge once she partnered with Dior (if Dior is letting you borrow whatever you want from them, I would think there are better choices) BUT I think she’s finally redeemed herself with this one. Now the makeup is a different story…
Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy
The only reason this isn’t on my best dressed list is that I feel like I’ve seen her in something like this before (or maybe that’s Rooney Mara’s Met Gala dress from 2013). The detail is amazing, but like I keep teasing you…THERE’S SO MUCH MORE AMAZINGNESS I HAVEN’T EVEN SHOWN YOU YET.
Cara Delevingne in Stella McCartney
I appreciate the non-traditional approach to not only a black tie event, but one with this theme. However, fake tat sleeves just remind me of Ed Hardy. And that is something I cannot get past (just like I can’t drink rosé because it reminds me of Franzia — it ruined pink wine for me, for life…thanks college).
Janelle Monae in H&M
No one rocks black and white like this girl. Also not her first rodeo when it comes to capes.
Jessica Chastain in Givenchy
I can just see Joan Rivers throwing her hands in the air right now with a wrist full of bangles and a couple of cocktail rings going, “MOVIE STAR!” And she’d be right. Killin’ it, Jess. (Miss you, Joan!)
Katy Perry in Moschino
If the theme was Banksy: Through The Streets then I would be all about this (although I could do without the severe hair). You know I love street art and graffiti but with the Met Ball you either need to dress to the theme or go high fashion…not dress to a completely different theme. You feel me?
Rosie Huntington-Whitely in Atelier Versace
I’m torn about these Atelier Versace dresses because I’ve seen them on the red carpet and in editorials before. They’re super cool. But once you seen one, you’ve sort of seen them all. Regardless of that…GORGEOUS.
Wendi Deng in Oscar de la Renta
Side cut-outs. A little 2013 for me…
Kate Hudson in Michael Kors
Although not a black dress, this is also one where the detail is probably much more mind blowing in person. It’s incredible in photos but DAMN. Too bad my Met Ball invite got lost in the mail (along with my James Beard Awards and Chanel Resort ’16 invitations…)
Dylan Lauren
Remember those DIY sets you had as a kid where you can pretty much bedazzle anything and because you could…you did? That’s the vibe I’m getting here. It’s like 1995 meets 2004 and there’s nothing good about that statement.
Chloe Grace Moretz in Coach
Cute…but this is the Met Gala. The bar is HIGH (higher than Miley Cyrus probably is right now).
Bella Hadid in Topshop
Not hating it…
Claire Danes in Valentino
For the Oscars or Golden Globes? Hells yes. For the Met Ball? Meh.
Constance Jablonski in Theory
If this wasn’t a black tie event, I would be all about this. And you know I’m down for dressing inappropriately for occasions that require a dress code, as I don’t do well with dress codes. But she’s wearing slide sandals. That might even be too casual for me.
Emily Blunt in Prada
Can’t escape the cape.
Miranda Kerr in Louis Vuitton
Speaking of casual…I hope her decision to attend was very last minute. This is like a Saturday night in River North. Not anywhere close to Met Gala material.
Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen in vintage John Galliano for Dior
Regardless of what they wear, they always just seem to look the same at every red carpet event. And not meaning they look like each other because DUH, but their overall aesthetic is always just long and oversized (not like I should talk because oversized everything is sort of my jam but you get the picture). Mary Kate in a mermaid dress? Anyone? Just Kidding. We’ll leave those to Sofia Vergara.

This is THE biggest red carpet event of the year (at least to me) so be on the look out for THREE more posts, including part two, trends of the night and of course…best dressed!
