Ah, the SAG Awards. It’s like the forgotten middle child between the Golden Globes and the Oscars…but that doesn’t mean the red carpet shouldn’t get some love. There’s actually been quite a few fabulous looks at the SAG Awards from years past (like when Anna Gunn proved that fit really matters and killed it in the accessories department with that Edie Parker clutch, for example) as well as ones we wish we forgot (re: crop topping while pregnant). So let’s see what went down on that red carpet last night…
Naomi Watts in Balenciaga
Navy is most definitely making its way back to the red carpet, and it’s something I’m totally on board with, especially when done in a funky way. This isn’t your ordinary navy dress with that unique off-the-shoulder detail. So I should love this, right? I do appreciate the effort but I think both Naomi and Balenciaga could have done much better.
Sophia Bush in Vivienne Westwood
This is one of those frustrating could-have-been-perfect moments. The various colors of jewelry pairings is unconventional yet spot-on. The hue of the dress is not one that’s easy to pull off yet Sophia is doing it quite well (although it would have popped a bit more with her darker locks). The Old Hollywood beauty thing is working in her favor, but what isn’t working? That fit. This material also doesn’t photograph well, so that doesn’t help, but whatever is going on from underboob to just above the knee ruins the entire thing. So. Damn. Close. Yet. So. Damn. Far.
Rosamund Pike in Dior
A step in the right direction after that Vera Wang situation at the Globes this year, but I really thought we have moved on from the high / low thing. This dress at a just-above-the-knee length would be amazing, although probably not fancy enough for this red carpet. But it seems as if a bunch of fabric was added in the back at the last minute, and that look is a 2011 trend we really need to get over. Hair and makeup, though? Thumbs up emoji for sure. Maybe even two!
Rashida Jones in Ungaro
It’s a rare occasion for me to like an Ungaro look on the red carpet. It’s either put on the wrong girl (great dress, wrong celeb), or the dress isn’t for me but the right celeb could possibly make it work (bad dress, good celeb) or it’s just a terrible dress (remember Katy Perry at the 2013 VMAs?) This reminds me of a Rorschach test with a light blue trim to liven things up with the hope of making you forget that you’re being evaluated. Not necessarily a bad thing (could be cool without the pop of color or maybe a different color for the “pop”) but overall, I’m not a fan.
Natasha Lyonne in Proenza Schouler
Finally…some Proenza on the red carpet (I really needed this). Typically their designs need to be worn by a “fashion girl” at these events — someone who typically takes risks that pay off when it comes to the red carpet. I wouldn’t say Natasha embodies that [and not just because you know I love me some Proenza] but somehow this really works. It’s pretty simple for Jack and Lazaro but it’s perfectly appropriate for the SAG Awards. Plus, the addition of that Minaudière that’s been on my wish list for quite some time now did not go unnoticed.
Sarah Hyland in custom Vera Wang
She always used to wear some terrible dresses on the red carpet, which I feel bad saying because she was basically a child. But as of late, she’s been stepping up her game. She hasn’t 100% figured it out yet but she’s on her way and I’m excited to see where she goes. I’m not totally sold on the hair style, but it’s been worse. So from the waist up, this is pretty fantastic…unfortunately I’m not a fan of nude underlay. If the skirt portion was was black on black, this could have perhaps been a best dressed pick. Perhaps?
Lupita Nyong’o in Elie Saab
This is probably one of the coolest dresses I’ve seen on the red carpet in quite a while. A full-on long sleeve printed gown with stripes is not for everyone, but I’m into it. I do wish it was a little more fitted in the arms (in just the slightest way, as seen in the Pre-Fall ’15 collection)…it would’ve taken the look from a 9.5 to a 10. But good for Lupita for choosing this dress…and her stylist for making it all happen.
Reese Witherspoon in Armani
She just looks like she belongs at an awards show, doesn’t she? The entire look (hair, makeup, dress, jewelry) is all very classic (AKA not my style) but that’s her thing and she is WERKING that red carpet. For that, Reese, I thank you.
Julianne Moore in Givenchy Couture
I know green on red heads is a thing and people love it. Up until now I wasn’t really into it (a little Christmasy for me, although it’s my favorite holiday…I realize that doesn’t make any sense but you just have to deal) but this specific shade of red hair with this specific shade of green is working for me. In general, though, I’m not a fan of the dress. I expect much more of a cool factor from Givenchy…and this sadly cutting it.
Emma Stone in Dior
My feelings towards the high / low hemline are exactly the same when it comes to a short dress under a long sheer skirt…over it. As much as it pains me to say this because I live for Emma Stone and have loved basically everything she’s ever worn on the red carpet…this isn’t doing it for me. Another one of those flawless from the waist up situations but other than that, I’m pretty disappointed. Okay very disappointed…how do you go from the most incredible Lanvin jumpsuit to this outdated trend?! [insert Alison Lou cry baby emoji necklace with diamond tears]
Julianna Margulies in Giambattista Valli
This is one of those looks where I really don’t even know where to begin. I guess let’s start from the top? Bodice is too tight, this sort of silhouette with such a fitted bodice needs the skirt portion to start more at the waist (rather than the hips, as it’s doing here in such a terrible way), this vibrant color is not easy to pull off and she’s most definitely failing here, and black t-strap strappy sandals to top it all off? WHAT IS GOING ON?! Who allowed this?
Camila Alves in Donna Karan
I feel like we’ve seen this strapless mermaid dress with a sash / train many times before…although I don’t think I’ve experienced purple velvet version (as this appears to be). Purple velvet is quite an odd choice as it’s very royal…not in a Kate Middleton or Lorde way but more in a trying too hard sort of vibe. Not my favorite combination for the red carpet (or ever).
Maggie Gyllenhaal in Thakoon
You know when you despise something and you can’t figure out why? It’s this.
Julia Roberts in Givenchy
This is the type of Givenchy piece that unlike Julianne Moore, has a cool factor. HOWEVER, this is done so wrong. This jumpsuit could be amazing if styled and fitted correctly but because stylists don’t always do their jobs and / or celebrities don’t give a shit and / or have terrible taste, things like this happen. Yet another “pretty great from the waist up” moment but the fit in the mid-section isn’t ideal, it appears the pants weren’t hemmed or tapered at all (or at least not properly for Julia), and those shoes are so basic it’s offensive to pair them with a Givenchy jumpsuit (which will be super awkward for me if I ever come to find out those shoes are Givenchy, although I can’t imagine Riccardo would do such a thing).
Emmy Rossum in Armani Prive
Yet another one of those pretty yet meh moments we see oh-too-often at these things.
Jennifer Aniston in vintage Galliano
Talk about SAG awards (just kidding!) It’s groundbreaking to see her in something not so simple (so basically other than a nude or black dress) but after experiencing this, I think she should stick with simplicity. It suits her. This doesn’t. This whole JLo at the Grammys look is not Jennifer [Aniston] and it never will be.
Felicity Jones in Balenciaga
Do you ever look at something and can’t tell if you absolutely love it or absolutely hate it? When it comes to fashion, that can happen…and as much as I’d like to make a decision about this, I’m going to have to leave you hanging for now. (Maybe we can just leave it at “I like it”)
Keira Knightley in Erdem
Anything is better after that Chanel disaster (two words I never thought I’d use together) at the Golden Globes a few weeks ago. I really don’t hate this dress. I don’t think the extra fabric around the baby bump is the best option (sometimes you just need to own the bump rather than hide it) but other than that, I’m into this. Like really into this. The color, the lace, the messy-IDGAF-hair. I DIG, Keira. I dig.

Overall I wasn’t super impressed with the red carpet last night. Lupita was the only person I could really say I loved her look. Other than that, it was a pretty wah wah evening (although honestly I didn’t watch the red carpet, as I am currently wandering LA trying to soak up as much Vitamin D as possible…so if you’re wondering why my Twitter feed wasn’t blowing up with #SAGAwards and #RedCarpet hashtags, you now have your answer).
Who were your favorites / least favorites from this year’s SAG Awards? Don’t be shy now (I sure wasn’t!)
