Fall 2015 Inspiration

Ever see a collection and wonder where it all began? The inspiration? The sketches? If not, it is something to think about. It’s funny when you actually get to hear or see some of the inspiration, you would have never guessed it had anything to do with the collection. Other times, it makes perfect sense. So today, with it being day one of NYFW, we’re going to look at some designers and what inspired their Fall 2015 collections you’ll be seeing this fashion month.

designer inspiration

Now these are not only sketches but various photos, mood boards and other randomness that has inspired these designers. What inspired ME was this post The Cut does just about every season (which is definitely worth checking out). And based just on those images and words the designers are inspired by, I chose the ones that stuck out to me the most. So I’m especially looking forward to seeing how these collections come together (and of course making some educated guesses myself). How can you not be intrigued when something like THIS is the inspiration?

designer inspiration

Narciso Rodriguez: Legs

Perhaps we’ll get an Angelina Jolie at the 2012 Oscars moment? Or just a collection of really short dresses and skirts? I just hope that nothing is Paris-Hilton-circa-2004-short…we should never see such lengths again.

jonathan simkhai

Jonathan Simkhai: Mechanized

From this image alone, I’m intrigued by the textures. One of my favorite things to do when putting an outfit together is to play with fabrics and textures. So if this is what Jonathan Simkhai is doing for Fall ’15, SIGN ME UP.

satellite

Cushnie Et Ochs: Satellite

This is just an incredible image…something I wouldn’t mind being blown up and framed as art in my hallway, actually. So that alone makes me extra intrigued by Cushnie’s FW15 collection. They’re known for their sleek silhouettes and cut-outs with unique placements, so I can’t imagine the collection featuring a satellite print such as this…but who knows? I wouldn’t hate it.

banana republic

Banana Republic: Travel

Although that’s the most basic answer to a “what inspired this collection?” sort of question, I just had to include this because this will be the brand’s NYFW debut. J. Crew has been killing it since they started doing fashion week so I’m curious to see how Banana will do. I also just like to say banana.

lure

Tanya Taylor: Lure

This can go in so many directions, but why I chose it is because of the colors in this image. Tanya Taylor is no stranger to color, so it would be no surprise to see these hues in her collection…but, lure? Are you luring me in with these fantastic colors? Are there fish / a nautical theme seen in the clothes? I just hope no real hooks are involved, because we don’t want to endanger the models.

suno

Suno: Madness

I’m already a fan of Suno so I always look forward to seeing what they’ll do each season but it’s not the illustration that caught my attention, it’s the fact that the inspiration word and the sketch don’t really connect, at least for now. Madness is not the first thing I think of when I see an abstract floral print dress but we’ll see. I’m sure Max and Erin will come up with a way to make me go “oh yes, madness…of course!”

creatures of the wind

Creatures of the Wind: Americana

Gotta represent the Chicago boys, right? These guys always create really out-there, artistic collections, so I am VERY curious to see how Shane and Christopher take Americana (typically a more casual look, that tends to involve denim in some way) and put their funky Creatures spin on it.

tome

Tome: Protection

If you don’t know Tome, get to know them. I truly think they’re one of the next big names in fashion (SJP did just design some shoes of them, after all). Their presence in the industry grows significantly every year so I have a feeling this season is going to be extra amazing. Like Suno, where I didn’t think the image and the word matched, I feel the same way here. It looks like mostly pictures of dancing, and when I think protection, I think boxing, sunscreen and condoms (don’t lie…you know you do too). So, where is Tome going with this? We’ll find out later this afternoon actually (4pm ET to be exact)

Thom Browne (thoughtful)

Thom Browne: Thoughtful

What makes a collection thoughtful? What is this image even of? I do not have the answer to either question…which makes me want to see the clothes even more!

nanette lepore

Nanette Lepore: Posh Rebel

Because if I were to be a rebel, I would want to be a posh rebel (which is a good thing if the goal is for me to buy the entire Nanette Lepore Fall 2015 collection).

j crew

J. Crew: Nostalgia

WHO DOESN’T LOVE A GOOD DOSE OF NOSTALGIA? I’m hoping for a lot of 90s references…

dion lee

Dion Lee: Silence

The first thing I thought of when I saw this image is that sliced leather jacket Dion Lee did a year or two ago (which I still regret not buying, to this day). Between that and this super simplistic yet beyond intriguing image, I’m going to need some Dion Lee FW15 ASAP.

Based on all those images and words (you can see the rest here), are there any collections you’re especially looking forward to? If you were to just pick one? Ready…set…COMMENT.

  1. Love the Thom Browne image: Thoughtful.
For spring, the clean lines of black and white are a huge attraction of mine. Simple and uncluttered, it sets me up for the summer season of Moroccan-inspired prints and fun retro prints in bold hues.
