Some of the latest trends seem to be all about the neckline — contrast collars, lace-up tops / dresses, bow blouses (thanks Gucci), and chokers…just to name a few. Now we have another to add to that list — and it goes NECK AND NECK with those other trends.

Sort of going along with the bow blouses, tie neck tops / dresses / jumpsuits are everywhere right now. It’s no surprise to see another trend hit the upper fourth of our body (as, like I said, that seems to be the way things are moving). Hopefully the lower half will get some love soon, but for now…we’ll stick to updated ways to make your neckline look…modern / fun / interesting / fashun-forward. If you’re sick of those other neck trends I originally listed, here’s a new one to try.
Now this isn’t all that different from the bow blouse, as it really just depends on how you tie that tie. If you tie it in a bow then you have a 70s-inspired bow blouse. And if you just tie it in a knot, you get more of a neck tie sort of look.
OR you can do what all the cool kids are doing (including myself…although I’m not as cool as the cool kids) and create that wrap around effect (which has more of an impact with something low cut, or if it’s a button-down you can leave it slightly unbuttoned).
This gives that choker vibe…and for some reason just looks super flattering. Take it from Tanya Taylor Pre-Fall ’16. She gets it.
Now if you want to create this look without buying multiple pieces, I hate to even suggest this (as it was one of the many regrettable early / mid 2000s trends) but a skinny scarf is a way to achieve that look with just one item.
If you’re going this route, I would stick to something really simple and neutral (re: Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall ’16). Prints, fringe, etc will easily go out of style (and if you really love them, then don’t spend a fortune…you will regret it).
But back to the star of the show — the tie neck blouse. Although I do think it’s a trend that will likely remain in 2016, I still dig it (especially Edun Pre-Fall below…see how much Pre-Fall is loving this trend?!) because it’s a fresh way to elevate your look without doing anything over-the-top. Whether you opt for a shirt, a dress or a jumpsuit (which I embraced just last month), I think it’s a trend worth going for. It also looks extra chic with a jacket / blazer. But like I always suggest with trends, only wear one at a time.
So if you’re going to take anything away from this post and you’re going to get on board with the tie neck look, I would play with the ties and make it your own. You can tie it in a bow, a knot, wrap it and let the ends hang, wrap it and tie the ends, not tie it at all…and probably some other things you’ll discover on your own.
