Or as we’d say on AIM circa 2001 — BaCk 2 SkEwL kEwL. Whether you’re still in school, still paying for school although you’re no longer in school or just want to feel a little nostalgic for second / have an excuse to go shopping, then listen up.
Either all the kids are back in school now or they will be very soon (as reminded by the endless loop of back to school shopping commercials). Although I haven’t zoned out in a classroom since 2010, it doesn’t mean I can’t go back to school shopping…right?
I always wonder that if I went back to school now…what would I wear on my first day? In middle school / high school, it was probably some combination of Bebe or Abercrombie (depending on the year…and my mood), perhaps some spaghetti straps (thankfully my public school rules weren’t too strict about those) and of course Steve Madden footwear of any kind.
Now, it would go a little something like — The Row backpack, Opening Ceremony varsity jacket + Common Projects sneakers. Then accessorized with a chic Smythson notebook, maybe some Anya Handmarch for my pencils and a variety of Olympia Le-Tan (to keep up on my reading of course). Obviously this is if money were no object, but hey…a girl can dream, right?
Wouldn’t it be so much easier to pretend to take notes in class with some OLT (Olympia Le-Tan)? [raises hand!]
But those items only get you through most of the day. They most definitely don’t work for gym class. Because I went to public school, I was never familiar with uniforms (nor can I ever understand the concept of someone forcing me to wear the same thing as everyone else…I’m talking to you, brides). So trying to wrap my head around wearing head-to-toe Heather grey while attempting to throw a ball or “running” the mile wasn’t exactly easy for me.
Although I do wish I took this time of the day a little more seriously…as those two bagels and cream cheese + a candy bar that I called lunch everyday freshman year…probably wouldn’t have affected as much sophomore year.
Now that’s neither here nor there (but it’s definitely 2003). I’m not sure if I’m the only one who’s noticed that every 14-22 year old dresses like they’re going to a music festival in the summer and with a 90s grunge vibe in the Fall. I find this hilarious as I’m sure these kids have never even heard of a cassette tape…but I’m curious to see how long this lasts and what they’ll be wearing next. If you happen to know anyone in this age range, ask them and report back to me. Could be a whole other blog post. Who knows?!
What would you wear if your first day of school was now? And how does that compare to what you wore back in the day? Please provide details (photos are encouraged…regardless of embarrassment level).
And if you want to feel all back to school cool as well, these should get you through at least third period.
