Apparently it’s not enough to just carry a handbag anymore. Between Chanel’s Spring ’15 collection and Fendi still making those bag bugs that sell out almost immediately, bag accessories are happening…and I want to know how you feel about it.
This isn’t a full-blown trend just yet, unlike Birkenstocks or the return of the choker, as not every designer is doing it…only a few. Fendi and Anya Hindmarch are the big players in this category right now, but depending on how people continue to respond to it, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be able to get [faux] fur ball key chains at H&M for $9.99. In the mean time, let’s see how this happened and what people are doing with these accessories for your accessories.
I think it’s sort of funny this trend is coming back, as I remember adorning my Coach bag with Coach keychains back in the day. I loved it so much I even had a pink suede heart keychain for my pink Coach wallet (in the logo print signature canvas of course). This was also the day of phone charms…which you absolutely had to have for your pink Motorola Razr (duh). Thankfully, though, bag charms have come a long way. But who knows? We might laugh at the fact we put huge furry monsters on our bags in seven or eight years from now?
I’m confident in saying that it’s the Fendi bag bugs (especially that super limited edition Karlito style that you couldn’t go on a street style blog without seeing at least one of last year) that made this trend happen once again.
But who else is getting on board? The same designer responsible for making bags featuring our favorite cereal mascots, as well as clutches that resemble a crisp packet…Anya Hindmarch. However, she’s not making your typical keychains turned bag charms.
She’s giving us a sense of nostalgia by letting us adorn our handbags…with crazy fun stickers. Not just hearts and stars and other shapes you typically think of when you think of stickers, but you can decorate your tote with a Band-Aid or spruce up your clutch with a hashtag (formerly known as the pound sign). The stickers are leather and are meant to be stuck on a handbag so as long as you’re willing to have some fun and get a little creative, the possibilities are endless.
At the end of the day, though, if you don’t want to splurge on a new bag but are sick of looking at the same old satchel, then think about trying a bag accessory. Pretty much any keychain will do (it doesn’t necessarily need to be a called a “bag charm”). You can also try a brooch to really take it to the next level…just be careful where you pin it (you can always place it on the strap or handle so it doesn’t have to pierce through the leather, if you’re wanting to preserve the bag). Or you can just go crazy and buy the entire Anya Hindmarch sticker collection and unleash your inner 4th grade self.
