After two weeks of airports, soft pretzels and being deceived by something “reasonably priced” when it’s really just in euros…I’m back in the USA. But before I get all Americana on you, there’s still a lot European goodness to cover. Of the three cities I visited on this trip, Berlin had some of my favorite street fashion. It’s not groundbreaking, but it is damn cool.
I was barely out of our hotel for an hour when I spotted my first “victim.” My friend and I were at a coffee shop / breakfast spot (that’s straight out of Logan Square) and I saw this girl in a long black jacket, skinny black jeans, sneakers and a top knot. Is it the most creative outfit I’ve ever seen? Absolutely not. But there’s just something about those Berlin vibes that made me be like holy shit I’m obsessed with her (or at least her outfit). It’s sort of like the whole French girl fascination in that effortless and cool way, but in Berlin you take that and give it an edgier, perhaps grungier twist. It’s all about black on black (which I decided to rock one night…just to fit in), skirts/dresses with black tights and A LOT of sneakers (especially Adidas, as it’s a German brand after all). The city is very laid back and it seems like many people are involved in the arts or creative industry in some way, which is clear by the way they dress (and the fact that EVERYTHING is graffitied…which was my favorite part).
Their signature style is pretty much the same for both men and women, although I did think the men dressed a bit edgier than the ladies. But like in any big city, styles can vary depending on what neighborhood you’re in. That first day we were in sort of a hipster ‘hood so of course there were plenty of beards, tattoos and man buns. Regardless of the neighborhood, though, you definitely see a theme when it comes to Berlin street style.
The best part about the Berlin look is that it’s pretty easy to put together and is perfect for this time of year. So if you too want to look like a Berliner, here’s a few things to get you started (plus a Mongrels in Common blouse…how good are those?)
