All Buttoned Up

As much as I like to think I don’t spend my days aimlessly scrolling through Instagram, because I really don’t, every once in a while I’ll do some Insta-exploring (although I always seem to end up on someone’s account who has 1+ million followers, but they have no bio and I’ve never even heard of them). I digress, though. This is not about Instagram stalking. It’s about what one may discover is a trend when one wasn’t aware this was a trend in the first place (at least according to every trend report that comes out twice a year…sometimes four times if we’re really feeling Pre-Fall or Resort). It’s time to get all buttoned up, my friends. It’s going to be a wild ride.

Just kidding. It’s not a wild ride at all. It’s just about these button front skirts that I CANNOT SEEM TO AVOID. It’s quite specific, I realize, but I can’t be on anything that requires the Internet without seeing one. How did this happen? Where did they come from?

gucci spring 2015

They showed up on a few runways for Spring. Gucci SS15 either set all the trends or followed them — because you can find pretty much every spring trend in that collection (suede, 70s, denim on denim, denim culottes, etc.) And let’s not forget…button front skirts.

Most of these buttoned up skirts we’re seeing are short and either suede or denim. They’re solid and neutral…not too many prints or patterns. But every once in a while, we come across one like this. And I hate to sound basic but…I can’t even.

I realize it’s Chloe and fashion girls love Chloe (#ChloeGirls does have over 10,000 posts on Instagram, after all) but a button front denim maxi skirt is just something I can’t get behind (whether it’s the high end design or the look for less). It’s one of those things that reminds me of something that was popular in the mid-200os (which I’ve vented about that horrible time for fashion quite often here on CCF) and although I wore a lot of bad 2000s trends (low-rise jeans, pieces of clothing that referenced either Team Paris or Team Nicole, and sunglasses that were bigger than my face…and I don’t have a small face…are just a few of the many), I don’t think I ever rocked a denim maxi skirt. Denim mini, unfortunately, is a different story. I had quite a few of those…that I’m sure my parents didn’t love.

Now of course both denim and mini skirts have come a long way. They can look cool on some people, like Alexa Chung and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who can make anything appear to be chic, but it’s not the easiest trend to rock, as it can easily look dated.

Of course I think you should try any trend you think best fits your style, so if button front skirts happen to be your vibe, then do it. I personally think the suede versions (there’s also a few non suede or denim styles at the bottom of this post if you’re looking for something different) are easier to wear, as they look a little more modern and current. I already told you my thoughts on denim (and if you missed it, I pretty much reserve the material for pants only…and rarely in blue). What’s most important here, regardless of material, is length.

This goes for skirts in general, not just ones that happen to have buttons going down the front. If you’re going for a mini skirt, keep your shoe choices fairly low to the ground. I would opt for ankle boots (they can have a heel…I’d keep it on the thicker side), flat sandals or some sort of cool loafer / oxford (yes I know…of course I would say that). If the skirt goes to the knee or a bit lower, you’ll want more of a heel, and a skinny heel (even a little strappy) will do the trick. Maxi skirts are the trickiest. I feel like why many of us don’t wear them is because we don’t know how (GUILTY!) They’re typically not one of those things you just “throw on” and you’re “out the door” (and when it comes to getting dressed, that’s pretty much a requirement for me) but if you are going to try one, I’d treat them like you’d treat flare jeans / wide leg pants…keep it chunky.

Although skirts in general aren’t really my thing, as they can be too girly for me, Courtney from Always Judging does a great job making skirts look laid back and approachable…even the button front ones!

So if you’re thinking about getting all buttoned up (or down…whichever you prefer) this spring, here’s a few ideas to get your juices flowing (extra buttons not included).
