Cannes you handle the red carpet realness that’s going on in the South of France right now?
Not only is every major actor / actress living it up in Cannes right now (for the Cannes Film Festival…if you haven’t figured that out yet) but so is every A-list model (re: Kendall, Gigi, Jourdan…just to name a few). You know I love me some red carpet so of course, we’re going to talk about it. Keep in mind, I already covered this subject in the latest episode of Fashion Friends. Also a heads up we’ll be talking about the looks from the amfAR Gala (also part of all that Cannes fabulousness) today and on next week’s podcast. So there’s even more CANNES FASHION happening soon. Stay tuned (or just subscribe…shameless plug, I know). In the mean time, here we go…
Sienna Miller in Valentino Couture
Is the looking like a kite thing intentional? That’s all I can think of. And although Valentino, I just don’t find kites all that glamorous…
Rooney Mara in Rochas
She seems to go for these detailed white gowns quite often, and I get it. With the contrast of her black hair and dark makeup, it makes a point. But I’m ready to see her in something different. Maybe a little PROENZA wouldn’t hurt (because it never does…)
Poppy Delevingne in Burberry
Best Dressed Pick
Yes we’ve seen the sheer dress over granny panties or a bodysuit before, but this is a much more chic and modern way of doing so. The color combinations and details are just so unexpected. Hair and makeup pairs with it perfectly. I would have maybe liked a simpler necklace but overall, FLAWLESS.
Karlie Kloss in Tom Ford
Best Dressed Pick
This is that sort of quintessential Cannes glamour that we look forward to each year. It’s sophisticated, with a little sex appeal (I do love me some sideboob…when done tastefully of course) and that’s exactly what Tom Ford is known for. Karlie + Tom = ❤️.
Natasha Poly in Atelier Versace
This would be a more conservative look at some Vegas red carpet…NOT Cannes material. Not even close.
Sienna Miller in Balenciaga
Not every look at Cannes is a glamorous gown. There are more casual events…and by casual I mean a tea-length Balenciaga dress. This actually looks very Chanel to me, and she is 100% referencing yesterday’s post, but we know she can do better. Between this and the kite dress, this isn’t her best Cannes.
Lily Donaldson in Saint Laurent
Best Dressed Pick
As much as I dislike anything that resembles rhinestones (thanks to the first five years of the new Millennium) THIS is when simple can make a statement. It’s got that elegant feel without being in any way conservative. I’m surprised at how much I like this…but I cant help myself!
Dita Von Teese in Ulyana Sergeenko Couture
This is one of those looks I totally appreciate, as it’s so unique (especially for Cannes) but it needs to be executed perfectly to be pulled off, and this just missed the mark. The short dress should be an inch or two shorter to really elongate the legs…and wearing anything that length with ankle straps is an absolute no. Just cuts you off right at the ankle! Who would want such a thing?
Natalie Portman in Lanvin
She looks uncomfortable. And I look bored.
Jourdan Dunn in custom Vera Wang
You know my feelings towards denim. And when this resembles a denim gown, I cannot get on board.
Gigi Hadid in Tom Ford
You have to be super careful when it comes to boobalicious dresses such as this one. Typically they’re much easier to wear (and I personally think they look better) with a smaller chest. This is perfect example of why. When you’re larger up there, you have to use a lot of tape to avoid what E! and US Weekly love to talk about…a nip slip. But because you have to use so much, it creates this unevenness along the neckline that just ruins the whole look. It literally looks like that dress used to be completely covered then someone took a scissors and cut out a rectangle in the middle. Not good. (Also I hate the shoes…couldn’t move on without letting you know).
Kendall Jenner in Alaia
I was surprised to hear this was Alaia…it’s very Dolce, no? Not like that’s important, what is important is this — crop tops are a YES in my book, but you can’t show belly button. You just can’t. If the skirt was an inch or two higher, I would be all about this. The difference a tiny detail could make…
Chanel Iman in Zuhair Murad Couture
JLo called…she wants her dress back (just kidding…they’re all borrowed anyway!)
Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein Collection
I have not yet made a decision about my feelings towards this. I am recording Episode 3 of Fashion Friends today though (and this dress will be discussed) so I’ll have to get back to you on that one.
Joan Smalls in Givenchy
Best Dressed Pick
I do love the dress (girl is showing off those shoulders!) but what I’m really drawn to is the hair and makeup (shocking, I know). There’s something about slicked back hair, bold brows and a red lip that is just so striking. I hope to one day pull that off. But in the mean time I’m sticking to maybe brushing my hair and a little mascara.
Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
Oh just wearing a little LV weeks after it hit the runway, NBD. Again, the slicked back hair…amazing. Like Dita, it’s nice to see something different on the red carpet (although this is not nearly as crazy as her look) but you don’t see olive separates with a waist belt at Cannes often (or ever). I can be into this.
Joan Smalls in Alaia
This looks like the most incredible swimsuit cover up I’ve ever seen (sort of a backhanded compliment…sorry Mr. Alaia).
Cate Blanchett in Giles
If you loved the print of Solange’s Met Gala dress but hated the silhouette, then here you go!
Diane Kruger in Prada
Still the queen of Cannes.
