Comic-Con: Fashion’s Best Kept Secret?

When you think “Comic-Con” I doubt “fashionable event” is the first thing that comes to mind. But after today’s post, you might just reconsider. Trust me on this one…

Listen, I never thought twice about who wore what to Comic-Con. Who cares, right? Apparently we’re all wrong. Obviously it’s no Oscars or Met Ball but celebrities showed up in some pretty cool outfits from some unexpected designers. It’s a casual weekend, although there are some dressier events throughout. I appreciate the variety here so I thought we should talk about it (warning: there’s a lot of Emma Roberts, Lea Michele and crop tops…just thought you should know).

Camren Bicondova in Alice + Olivia

I have no idea who this is, but I find it ironic her look is very 90s and I’m sure she never lived in that decade. It’s not all that exciting but I still dig it.

Ashley Madekwe

I’ve been searching all morning to try and find out who makes this outfit because I actually want to wear it (shocking, as I’m not a denim-on-denim kind of person). You could easily wear this with sandals or sneakers in real life but the heels and the red lip take it to a dressier level (without looking “dressed up”). Might be one of my favorite looks from Comic-Con this year…

Emma Roberts in 3.1 Phillip Lim

Your first Emma sighting (but most definitely not the last), I both love this and hate this at the same time. It’s very ghostly (yes, that is the only word I can think of to describe this) and not necessarily in a bad way. I don’t love her hair this color so I’m hoping it’s for a new role. Overall, both love and hate…and that’s all I can give you.

Natalie Dormer in Mary Katrantzou

I’m a huge fan of Mary Katrantzou so I get extra excited to see her designs worn at major events (if you can consider Comic-Con a major event). This is a great dress and it fits her very well but the shoes totally ruined it for me. With a dress this length, you need to show as much ankle as possible and these complex kicks just cut her off…sort of ruins the whole look. SEE HOW IMPORTANT SHOES ARE.

Lea Michele in Zuhair Murad

I like the idea of this (as I’m down for a shorts suit any day) but everything she wears feels so…forced. Do you get that vibe? This is probably the best outfit she wore for all of Comic Con, but it’s just so hard for me to love her looks because they never feel authentic. Also, matching orange shoes? Come on…

When you do cut outs, they need to hit at all the right places in order for them to appear flattering. The cut outs here are fine but the hanging fabric at the hip bones just widens the whole look…and I think I speak for everyone when I say NO ONE WANTS TO LOOK WIDE.

I sort of love this because this is what her character on The O.C. would have worn during her rebellious phase (remember Kaitlin Cooper, Marissa’s sister?) but I think that’s just me feeling nostalgic and still longing for Seth Cohen.

Katharine McPhee in ALC

Guys, I wasn’t kidding about those crop tops…

Lea Michele in Tanya Taylor

THEY’RE EVERYWHERE (and this is so Taylor Swift, it’s hard to even see it on anyone else).

Emma Roberts in Tanya Taylor

One of those not-all-that-exciting-but-super-wearable looks. Also two thumbs up for Tanya Taylor getting some major love at Comic-Con this year!

January Jones in Zimmermann

I absolutely love Zimmermann but this is actually offensive.

And we’re back! [to Lea Michele looking like a desperate housewife who just got some work done and is eager to show it all off]

Beth Heathcote in Rodarte

Definitely not my style but YAY for Rodarte!

Emma Roberts in AWAVEAWAKE

I’ve never heard of this designer, so I like when these sort of things give me the opportunity to discover them. You know I like a slip dress (and this one is not a color we see everyday, so I appreciate that) plus a little M2MALLETIER never hurt anyone…

Hate the hair. The dress is at least better than the Zimmermann look (which isn’t saying much…)

At first glance, this appears to be a jumpsuit (with a strangely constructed top half) but it’s actually a top and pants. I get it. I like where she was going with this, but when it looks like a chunk of the top is missing (and not a strategically placed cut-out) it throws the whole thing off.

Alicia Vikander in Proenza Schouler

Love the dress (duh). Hate the shoes (maybe not so duh).

Emma Roberts in Line + Dot

This is hands down her worst look at Comic-Con this year. Hair and makeup are awful (keep in mind, I adore her). We already talked about off-the-shoulder tops and dresses and I warned you about ones that look like a strapless top with a last-minute sleeve addition (not cute, see above). However, it’s not even the beauty look or the dress that offends me most…IT’S THOSE DAMN RED SHOES. Why?!

CHIC.

Did you have any favorite looks from Comic-Con this year? Are you surprised about the fashion or are you like McKayla and not impressed?
