The 2015 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund recipients were awarded last night and something MAJOR went down this year (besides crazy outfits on the red carpet…although it’s not much of a red carpet…more like a green planty wall).
For the first time ever, the fund awarded THREE designers each an equal grand prize of $300k for their businesses (typically there’s been one grand prize winner in the past and 2 runners up who receive about half the funding). So this is kind of a big deal. Clearly Steven, Anna, Diane, and friends thought Aurora James of Brother Vellies, Jonathan Simkhai, and Rio Uribe of Gypsy Sport all deserved it this year. Bravo fashion friends!
So now that you know the important stuff, let’s get to my favorite subject — WHO WORE WHAT…
Zendaya in Thakoon
If there’s any cocktail look that’s literally perfect for fall, THIS is it guys. When I first glanced at this, only three letters popped in my head — WTF — but the more I stare at it, it’s one of those fashiony looks that you get or you don’t. Oddly enough, I think I get it…and I’m sort of loving it.
Misty Copeland in Zimmermann
Love the dress. Adore everything Zimmmermann does. Although I’m not sure if an Australian designer is necessarily appropriate at a Council of Fashion Designers of AMERICA (CFDA) event…but she looks great. Hate the shoes but I can deal.
Leigh Lezark in Dion Lee
Exact same comments as above, minus shoes, plus FIERCE.
Jessica Hart in Tome
Now Tome is a different story as the designers used to be based in Australia, but now that they’re in NYC, they were actually finalists for the Fashion Fund in 2013. But that’s neither here nor there. Although I’m indeed a Tome fan (remember this awesome shirt? And gold cape?) I’m not 100% on board with this look. I’m no longer into platform pumps, so that doesn’t help the situation. The long loose cardigan paired with that long neutral skirt is just too frumpy. And she’s a damn supermodel! Definitely doesn’t do Tome justice (sorry Ryan & Ramon).
Demi Moore in Zac Posen
Yawn + needs a strappy shoe (or just not a pointed toe pump).
Constance Jablonski in Wes Gordon
From the ankles up, I would say this is a best dressed pick. Who know orange suede could be so chic? I also typically don’t like when there’s too many slits / dips going on (as this has two very high slits and a deep V) but it totally works here (being a model might be why). BUT those damn shoes…ruin the entire thing. See how important shoes are? That’s why we have so many 🙂
Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy
If you’re going for that ill-fitting lingerie look then YES.
Cipriana Quann in Ohne Titel
Best Dressed Pick
Would I ever think teal, chainmail and studs could result in something as fabulous as this? No way. But this combination of Ohne Titel awesomeness + Cipriana Quann realness is just SLAYING this party.
Elsa Hosk in Tanya Taylor
The barn dance is actually in the next venue over…
Imaan Hammam in Baja East
Best Dressed Pick
This had to be my favorite look of the night. A long sleeve dress is not easy to pull off, let alone one with any sort of pattern. The hand painted look of those stripes, the perfect placement of them, the high slits, the turtleneck?! It’s everything I could ever ask for at an event like this. Bonus points for having ridiculously amazing hair.
Lorde in Givenchy
Not Riccardo’s best night. You know I am SO down for a dress with pants, but this is not the way to do it.
Vanessa Axente in Cadet
Typically I’m not a fan of this sort of material, as it doesn’t photograph very well and it’s not easy to keep smooth, BUT between the color and the fit, this is pretty fantastic. I would have loved to see a cooler hair style but the outfit on it’s own is ?.
Mackenzie Davis in Creatures of the Wind
My feelings towards this are similar to how I first viewed Zendaya’s look. I want to hate it, but it just works…even though it appears that road kill is draped over her shoulder. Hey, it’s FASHUN…what do you expect?
Lake Bell in Calvin Klein
I love me some Lake Bell but I don’t usually love her red carpet style. Although not exactly blowing my mind, this is at least a step in the right direction…
Karlie Kloss in Proenza Schouler
Leave it to Karlie to somehow look BASIC in Proenza.
Evan Chen in Altuzarra
I understand where Joseph Altuzarra was going with this dress, however I’m just not willing to go there with him.
Chanel Iman in Fausto Puglisi
Kylie Jenner now kicking herself for not getting to this outfit first.
Andreea Diaconu
Best Dressed Pick
This look is giving me one of those Dree Hemingway moments where she tends to be quite underdressed for the occasion but she looks so damn cool it doesn’t even matter. I’ve mentioned many times I’m a sucker for a suit or pants at any red carpet event so of course I’m going to be drawn to this. The sandals are such an odd touch but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Between the shoes, the suit and the hair…I am literally copying this exact look, if I can figure out who designed that outfit, who made those shoes and who is responsible for those amazing locks of hers…
Fernanda Ly in Gypsy Sport
Do I like the dress on its own? Not really. But with that crazy teased pink hair…you go Fernanda!
Taylor Hill in Jonathan Simkhai
It’s not everyday where I can admit to something strapless being actually cool (it is my least favorite neckline, besides one shoulder, after all…) but Jonathan Simkhai has shown me up. Although a mid-section cut-out is no new news, this is a solid pick for the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund Awards. And shockingly enough, I don’t hate the shoes!
Hereith Paul in 3.1 Phillip Lim
I’m into that crop top with a blazer sort of look that gives a going-to-the-club vibe, but you want to keep it professional. The pants are dope. Love that large tie waist. My only problem is the length! If they were hemmed properly, this would be a best dressed pick for sure, but like Constance…it’s only a best dressed pick from the ankles up!
