If there’s any type of trend I love, it’s a micro trend. They’re the perfect way to keep current without looking like you have no personal style and you only wear what’s “now” (cue #trendsontrendsontrends). So the latest sub-trend, if you will, to hit the runways? It’s time to up the contrast…
Contrast collars are not groundbreaking, but they’re a subtle way to add a little extra something to your look without the use of any accessories. Designers like J.W. Anderson, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang did it for Spring 2015 and although we still have quite some time until we see flowers blooming again, why not get ahead of the trends and try this now? It’s not too risky, it’s very easy to wear (you don’t really have to think about styling it — a contrast collar goes with everything) and there are options at every price point so all fans can participate. Woo hoo!
If you don’t like to wear a lot of color (which lately I seem to be only in neutrals — I guess I’m growing up…lame) the easiest way to do this is with black and white. Black shirt white collar, black collar white shirt. Just be careful with this one so you don’t look too…priest-ish. If you want to go the black and white route, try using cream instead of white for the collar. You’ll thank me later.
But if you want to take it up a notch, I recommend a little color…especially for fall/winter. I always think if you can find anything appropriate for these seasons that has any sort of color, it counts as a win.
Whether you stick to neutral contrasts or want to add some bright hues to your cold weather wardrobe, try a contrast collar why don’t ya? It will be fun. Promise. BUT if you’re down for a little more versatility, I’d go with a detachable collar. Fur, gold, Saint Laurent…whatever strikes your fancy, just go for it.
Thoughts on the contrast collar, friends? Don’t be shy now.
