Considering we got over six inches of snow yesterday, music festivals are probably not the first thing on your mind. But with the trendiest festival of them all just around the corner and the fact that Lollapalooza tickets go on sale TODAY, it’s not that crazy to talk about fashion’s newest season.
The two main fashion seasons are spring and fall, then we also have those “in-between” collections that people only really freak out about when it’s Celine — Pre-Fall and Resort. Over the last few years it seems like a third “in-between” season has emerged and this year, it’s full blown festival season.
Although technically it’s the spring collections that are currently in stores, many brands are either curating or creating entire festival collections. And you can imagine it’s a shit ton of fringe, diaper denim and crop tops. But at least it makes finding your Coachella outfit a little easier, right?
I wrote a post last year about how festival outfits needed an upgrade (and I’m not the only one with that opinion). I’m down with the general aesthetic. Don’t get me wrong. But I’d just like to see it done in a more…tasteful way? With the current 70s craze, this festival season is either going to be super chic or look like a pathetic version of Woodstock.
“Festival season” is happening whether we like or not. PopSugar already has a dedicated festival feed. WWD reported today all of the fashion brands that will be at Coachella this year, including runway shows from designers like Nanette Lepore and Tracy Reese. Nordstrom’s Director of Creative Projects, Olivia Kim, has curated a festival-themed Pop-In@Nordstrom that takes on more of the neon and quirky side of festival season. Both ASOS and Topshop have festival sections you can shop online right now. Even my recent LA-discovery, Moon Juice (who I wish would open in Chicago!) has a festival kit to keep you “thriving through this season of music, love, and heavenly adventures.”
Not to be confused with Topshop’s festival kit, which has “essentials” like hair chalk and temporary tattoos.
So what do you think of all of this? Are you down with festival season? Are you going to any music festivals this year? If so, will you be shopping any of these festival collections? Remember, just because you’re going to see multiple outdoor concerts in one weekend does not mean you need to wear a kimono. And just so I can say festival one more time…don’t be surprised if a “festival fashion week” arises within the next couple of years. I’m calling it now!

i’m on standby for my Lolla ticket RIGHT NOW woohoo!!!
i hate the try-hard Woodstock-themed outfits and native american headdresses, but i’m all for the toned-down, casual version of summer/festival dress — especially since, as i get older, there are less and less occasions for me to dress so casually 🙂
