When it comes to math, I am absolutely clueless. I use a calculator for things that most 5th graders could probably do in their head (so obviously I am NOT smarter than a 5th grader) but at least I can beat them when it comes to fashion knowledge. That must count for something.
One sector of math that didn’t completely kill my GPA in highschool was geometry. I like shapes on clothes, so I’m sure I could figure it out on paper. Granted I didn’t get an A+ (overachieving was so uncool at the time) but I passed…and that’s all that matters.
Stella McCartney’s Fall 2012 ads are a great visual lesson in geometry, as well as photoshop. Geometric shapes come and go as trends when it comes to fashion, but I always personally enjoy them. You don’t have to buy something just because it’s on trend and it’s perfectly acceptable to wear something untrendy…unless it’s Isabel Marant sneakers next season. Those can be over now, please.
Let’s start with the head down (you didn’t think this was an actually geometry lesson did you?)
Accessories are always an easy way to incorporate shapes into your look. These “doorknocker” earrings by ASOS are a statement on their own.
House of Harlow does the triangle thing well. I especially love this gold HOH collar necklace. It’s edgy, it’s geometric but not over the top.
Color blocking had a big moment for Spring 2011 and geometry played a huge role in that. It’s not too late to start wearing the trend so give this Raoul t-shirt a try. Don’t be afraid to mix prints and incorporate some printed pants (best to mix larger geometric shapes with more subtle prints).
Due to the fact that it’s now FREEZING you might want to try a sweater instead. If you’re a fan of geometric prints, you really can never go wrong with Marni.
Looking for something a little more fancy? Try a geometric dress like this one by Thakoon Addition.
Like I always say living in Chicago, stylish outerwear is KEY. 3.1 Phillip Lim did a great patchwork coat this season. It’s pricey but worth the investment!
Pamela Love is the queen of triangles, one of my personal favorite geometric shapes (do most people have a favorite shape? or is that weird?) Her rose-tone triangle ring is dainty and edgy at the same time.
Why use a rectangular clutch like everyone else when you can rock a TRIANGULAR clutch? Only by Jil Sander of course.
Moving downward…Tibi did a great printed pant for Fall. Incorporating many elements I love: silk, baggy pants, shapes and the burgundy trend. Thank you Tibi.
I’m not a big skirt person but if I had to work in a corporate office I’d probably be wearing this Jonathan Saunders skirt as we speak. And although not business appropriate I’d probably be wearing a cropped leather jacket too.
And finally, no outfit is complete without a killer pair of shoes. Pierre Hardy is king of geometry when it comes to footwear and these cube booties are no exception.
