I don’t know about you but I’m growing quite sick of these grey rainy days. But when it’s spring time in Chicago, what do you expect? Actual spring weather with flowers blooming and people frolicking in the streets? We get that maybe a few days each spring…the lucky 48 hours of 70s and sun we might get to experience. But right now I’m staring out my window, wondering what I’m going to sacrifice today (meaning allow to get wet)…which inspired me to write today’s post.
This isn’t the first time I’ve talked about stylish rain gear but as the years go on, we’re introduced to more and more styles we never knew were possible. I mean, who would’ve thought a handbag raincoat could happen? And now it’s very much happening. Thought your only rain boot options were Hunter? Think again. Loeffler Randall actually makes super stylish rain boots…that don’t look like rain boots at all! I’ve had an olive lace up pair for about three years now and I wear them way more than I ever wore any of the classic knee-high styles. If you want to try something even more unique (although still super simple and even seasonless!) go for a rain sneaker. Yes, that is a thing.
On the warmer rainy days, the last thing you want is rubber covering up half your leg, so I’m 100% down for the short ankle boots or even rain sneakers…or whatever not-so-traditional-rain-boot happens next.
Sometimes you just have to sacrifice a pair of ankle boots, sandals or heels, especially if you’re going somewhere that’s not exactly…rain boot appropriate. In these cases, I just dedicate one pair of each (typically under $150 so I don’t feel like my life is falling apart once they’re ruined) to the rain / snow and I will wear them until I cannot wear them anymore (like literally until they’re falling apart). Not exactly a rain shoe…but they’re my rain shoes.
Now outerwear is the fun part because we seem to have the most options in this category. You no longer have to stick to a trench in order to protect yourself from getting wet. I typically just go for anything with a hood (especially on the cold rainy days, as most lightweight raincoats simply won’t do) but as long as you avoid a leather jacket or a silk bomber, you should be good. On those days where it’s absolutely pouring and you really don’t have another option, I rounded up some pretty fantastic rain-proof outerwear that you might just enjoy wearing. Trust me, once you have a rain coat you actually like…it’s a game changer when it comes to these dreary days.
And if you’re wondering why I’m so adamant about hoods, it’s because I’m not a big fan of umbrellas. It’s just something else to worry about (and if it can’t fit in my purse, I will indeed forget it somewhere) and I always just hope my hood will do the trick. Now if your coat doesn’t have a hood…Maison Michel has you covered (literally).
