With Isabel Marant x H&M launching today (and we all know how I feel about designer collaborations) I thought we should look at the real reason why everyone loves the French designer. Because after all, Isabel Marant was happening way before the Dicker boot and sneaker wedges. For reals.
If you really want to get old school Marant, you can check out this video of her Fall ’99 collection.
Who knew that one day you’d [kind of] be able to find these fabulous Parisian things at H&M?
When I found out a few years ago that Isabel Marant has been around for way longer than I originally thought, I couldn’t help but wonder “why the Marant craze now?” She started by designing costume jewelry and accessories in the late 80s, then created a line of jersey and knitwear in 1990 called Twen (which eventually evolved into her namesake label 4 years later). Now perhaps, us Americans were just late in the game and Marant was a household name for the fabulous and French while I was still playing with Barbie and shopping at Limited Too…but regardless of what made her an especially desired label in recent years, let’s throw it back this Thursday for a little vintage Marant.
(don’t mind the blurry photos…apparently the runway was shot with disposable cameras back in the day)
Spring 2003: Let’s just say this is very…2003.
Spring 2004: MID-CALF LEGGINGS.
Fall 2004: That collection of jersey and knitwear is really coming in handy…
Spring 2005: Capris, cowboy boots, bucket hats…welcome to the mid-2000s.
Fall 2006: “Socks with sandals” (feat. Drake)…No new trend, no new trend, no new trend, no, no new.
Fall 2007: Getting closer to that Marant we all know and love today…
Fall 2009: I just realized I had those boots on the right in college…except they weren’t Marant and I probably had no idea who she was at the time #accidentalknockoff.
Spring 2010: I still think about that fur to this day (it’s an Alaia situation).
Fall 2010: THIS is my kind of Marant.
Spring 2011: Who wears short shorts? Marant SS11, that’s who.
Fall 2011: Cue fringe frenzy (but hey, do you recognize that sweater?)
Spring 2012: Kicking off the athletic trend (pun intended).
Fall 2012: A little bit country…
And now…H&M 2013
