After a conversation I had with my next podcast guest (you’ll find out who that is tomorrow!) I never realized until now this sort-of sub-trend that is temporary tattoos. It’s one of those things that’s been in the back of our minds for a while now, but is it time they make their way to the front? Let’s find out.
I bring this up because Rihanna recently collaborated with jewelry designer Jacquie Aiche on a collection of both black and metallic temporary tattoos. Now if anyone is going to collaborate on anything in the tattoo category, it should be Rihanna…so I get where they’re going with this. But with the oversaturated metallic tattoo market (thanks Flash Tattoos), where exactly are we going with this?
Let’s start from the beginning. I have zero tattoos. I love the look of a few hidden small ones, but due to my great fear of needles, it’s just not in the cards for me (I also suffer from extreme indecisiveness…also probably not the best contender for permanent ink). Because I really do like tattoos, though, I was into the fact that stylish temporary tattoos were finally available. Cue: Chanel Spring 2010.
I would have never thought about a fake leg chain tattoo, let alone a Chanel one. But even better? They were actually put into production so we could all wear a little Chanel, one temporary tattoo at a time.
Although they were crazy expensive for temporary tattoos, they’re a hell of a lot cheaper than a Chanel bag or piece of jewelry. So I thought, why not?
Fun fact, this photo was taken by my friend Amy Creyer my first day of attending my first full NYFW in 2010 (I had been the season previous but for just one show). And guess what? It’s not the last time you’ll see that dress…
But I digress…now back to the tats. I actually still have these Chanel tattoos and wear them every once in a while (re: Coachella last year). I have to say though…I’ve tried quite a few temporary tats in my day and NONE last longer than these. Up to two weeks. Then you really have to scrub them off! So I guess they’re worth the money after all…
And yes, I admit. I have given in to the metallic tattoo trend. I think they’re fun, but with music festivals becoming an actual season (and temporary tats being a big part of it), I think I’m going to retire them, at least for the time being (although this Moda Operandi exclusive with super cool jewelry designers makes me think twice!)
Speaking of, like Jacquie Aiche and Rihanna, I’m into the idea of a jewelry designer collaborating with someone to create temporary tattoos, because they actually look like jewelry. But for me personally, I need to wait for Flash Tattoos to die out a bit before I get back on board with the jewelry designer tattoo collaborations. It’s unfortunate because I do love me some Alison Lou (in any form!)
You know how I am when a trend has been overdone…I just have to give up. But what if I don’t want to? I think a good compromise in this situation would be to go back to basics…with the black temporary tats. There’s not as many options, now that their metallic counterpart has taken over BUT I have found some cool ones you can shop below (and that are much more budget-friendly than Chanel!)
And although it’s not for me, as I’m not all that into colored tattoos, if you love color and metallics, Flash Tattoo’s got a brand new set you’re going to love.

So what do you think temporary tattoos? Would you rock one? Or would you rather stick to the permanent stuff? If you prefer temporary, would you go black, metallic or colored (or metallic colored?) Or are you just like way too old for this? (which I do feel sometimes…)
