Lace It Up

Is it just me or is everyone lacing it up all the sudden? Tops, dresses, even jumpsuits and rompers…where did these lace up versions come from? I feel like I just got smacked in the face with lace[s]…so let’s find out why.

It’s not like lace up clothing came out of nowhere. It’s something that brands like Pucci and Cavalli do quite often, and in bold prints (which is, in my opinion, on the tacky side…you can also get the look for less…which I still cannot recommend). But regardless, it’s no new news. We should have known when Marant did it for Spring ’13, it would be everywhere eventually (although I’m shocked it took this long…maybe her trend influence only works for footwear).

Fast forward a bit, we’re now seeing this from designers like Givenchy for Spring ’15…

And Balmain for Resort ’16…

So it looks like this isn’t going away any time in the near future. So what does that mean for us?

Like any trend, when worn with other trends looks like #trendsontrendsontrends (which I like to avoid). Although your lace up top might look super cute with your button front skirt and fringe sandals…it will also look very 2015 (and you’ll probably regret it by 2016). So opting for a neutral lace up top / dress paired with something more timeless (leather, denim, etc.) would be the ideal way to go.

Also keep in mind that there’s a variety of lace up tops and dresses that will work for your…chest situation. The ones that go super deep would be better for a smaller bust. But if you have a little more happening up there, there’s still plenty of options (this one is my favorite…actually regardless cup size).

Clearly Kim doesn’t read CCF. And that’s okay…not like I have anything all that nice to say 😉

We’ve seen this trend come up in all seasons, as it can really work for most times of the year. In a light cotton cover-up sort of way for summer, a silk top for spring / fall and even a suede / leather variety for fall / winter. I’m not 100% sold on this detail, to be quite honest (as seeing things like this and this remind me of my least favorite fashion decade and pretty much scare me off) BUT when I see this (below) I could definitely get on board.

Like I mentioned before…because we’ve seen this around, especially on recent runways, I’m not sure why it took so long for it to blow up all the sudden. Maybe I’d see a lace up top every once in a while and now suddenly every blogger is wearing one this month (along with lace up shoes…Aquazzura seems to be the team favorite, in both heels and flats). I just hope that lace front pants don’t happen again (although now seeing Alexander Wang’s 10 year anniversary collectionthey might just resurface). I had a pair of low rise lace up flare jeans that I LOVED circa 2002 and let me tell you…I don’t wish those on anyone.

IT’S YOUR TURN NOW. What do you think about this look? Would you rock this in top or dress form? Dress or romper? Coat or jacket? PANTS OR SHORTS? (please say no to the last one…but if you say yes, I will [try] not hold it against you). If you’re down to lace it up this season, then here’s a few CCF approved options…
