The New Classic

Balenciaga City. Givenchy Nightingale. Proenza Schouler PS1. Chanel 2.55. What do these all have in common? They’re classic handbags, signature to their designer. But fashion seems to be moving in this direction where we don’t necessarily need a big designer name attached to our bag to make the investment. The perfect example of this is what I like to call the new classic — M2MALLETIER.

M2MALLETIER

I discovered M2MALLETIER, as I do with many designers, on Net-a-Porter. I was sold right away, as it’s difficult to find a bag that easily transitions from day to night (the only one I’ve found so far that does the trick is the PS11 Tiny). The bag has to be large enough to fit your day things but small enough for evening. Having some sort of structure and/or hardware tends to dress it up a bit so that can work for many occasions. And a detachable shoulder strap is a major bonus. So once I found the M2MALLETIER La Fleur Du Mal, I knew it would be everything I ever wanted in a handbag (and thanks to many having access to my Net-a-Porter wish list, my dreams came true this Christmas).

M2MALLETIER

Now M2MALLETIER is a pretty new brand (they’ve only been around since 2012). They’re based in Barcelona and designed by Melissa Losada and Marcela Velez, who met at Parsons (the school, not chicken and fish). The designs stem from minimalism, surrealism, and architecture, adorned with their signature gold needle handle (the best part!)

As I get older and my style evolves, I’m becoming more attracted to classic bags with a twist, like what M2MALLETIER does so well, because it’s something I know I can wear just about anywhere for many years to come and it will never look “so last season” (although I still love me some Charlotte Olympia…regardless of their lack of being timeless).

M2MALLETIER

I appreciate brands who don’t overcomplicate things — they do a few styles really well (Mansur Gavirel is a great example). M2MALLETIER is the epitome of this. With simple shapes like the Fabricca, Amor Fati and La Fleur Du Mal, they’re all just a little different yet if you know the brand, it’s obvious they’re 100% M2MALLETIER.

Now I’m not the only one whose on board with these bags. Celebrities like Solange Knowles and Margot Robbie are just a few of many rocking their M2MALLETIER to super cool events. Again, they’re perfect for those days when you know the paparazzi will be on your ass following to lunch, shopping, etc. but also for those many red carpet events you have night after night. I know, our lives are exhausting.

M2MALLETIER

So I’m pretty confident in saying that M2MALLETIER is the new classic and will be around for quite some time. If you feel the same way, and are itching to spend that $$$ you got for the holidays…

What do you think of the M2MALLETIER bags? Did you already know about them? Love? Hate? Indifferent? NOT the new classic? Share your thoughts.

  1. I LOVE M2Malletier, and discovered them through NAP/Moda Operandi a year or two ago. The Amor Fati is my fave, and the pony hair ones are perfect texture for the frigid winter months here in Chicago. I love bags that are sculptural and architectural (well, I like clothing that is sculptural and architectural, too), and have an unexpected bent to them. Aside from M2M, other geometric bags that I’m dying to have are ones by BU WOOD, Mark Cross, and the Chicago designers, Pleats Design. Rauwolf makes great sculptural clutches, too. All of them allude to architecture and geometry. Brilliant.
