There’s always so many looks to judge at the Met Ball, I have to divvy up the posts somehow. If you’re all good with parts one and two, let’s see what was trending on last night’s red carpet. First up? The naked dress.
Beyonce in Givenchy Couture
I know it’s Beyonce but does anyone else find it at least a little bit annoying she always has to be the last person to walk the red carpet at pretty much every major event? Just a thought. About the dress, though, it’s very…Beyonce. If you’re going to wear this off the stage, it’s going to be at the Met Gala. It may not be the first dress I’d choose for such an occasion, but you have to admit she looks damn fine.
Kim Kardashian in Roberto Cavalli, pictured with Kanye West
In more naked dress news, here’s Kim trying to recreate Beyonce’s naked dress + feathers moment from the 2012 Met Ball. Don’t think we forgot, Kim.
Jennifer Lopez in Versace
If I didn’t have access to any photos from last night and you told me three people wore a naked dress and I had to guess who they were…my first guesses would actually be Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and JLo. They’ve worn the look before, they’re not afraid to be a little showy on the red carpet, and they all have the bodies for it. I sort of hate everything JLo wears though and this is no exception (but she happens to be wearing another trend from the night we’ll get to in a moment).
Joan Smalls in Roberto Cavalli
There was no lack of skin showing last night, from cut-outs to naked dresses and whatever Jamie Bochert was wearing. Joan Smalls was also on board. I can’t decide whether to not this is indeed a naked dress BUT it transitions perfectly into our next trend (and something I’ve openly discussed I am not a fan of) — the one shoulder dress.
Kristin Wiig in Prabal Gurung
I just don’t get this. It’s not very Prabal, it has nothing to do with the theme nor is it high-fashion looking…it’s just a light yellow one shoulder dress. Ironically the exact color of my current manicure.
Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan Atelier
You’re just going to have to bear with me here while I get through these one-shoulder situations. It’s likely I will not be a fan of any.
Emma Roberts in Ralph Lauren
Shiny green? One Shoulder? Are you trying to offend me, Emma?
Dianna Agron in Tory Burch
MIND. [NOT]. BLOWN.
Hannah Davis in J Mendel
Been there. Seen that.
Sarah Jessica Parker in H&M and a Philip Treacy headpiece
Going from the one-shoulder trend last night to the next big red carpet hit — the headpiece. SJP always takes the Met Gala themes to the next level. No matter what she does, it’s never right or wrong. It’s just her really showing her appreciation for fashion and the Met exhibit the event is celebrating. If this dress was worn to any other event, I’d hate on it. But with that headpiece…mind is actually blown.
Selena Gomez in Vera Wang
Yawn.
Karen Elson in Dolce & Gabbana
My feelings towards Karen Elson are the exactly opposite of those towards Selena Gomez. Like how can you even comment on a plain white gown with a flower crown when you have THIS to look at? I loathe tulle but this is magical.
Brie Larson, Courtney Eaton & Annabelle Wallis in Dolce & Gabbana
Man, do they look expensive.
Vanessa Hudgens in H&M with a Gigi Burris Millinery headpiece
Between Lily Collins and Vanessa Hudgens, I’m 100% on board with these little veils from last night. I’ve been wanting to try one ever since I saw Chiara Totire rocking a veiled beanie a few years back. Obviously I cannot find the right occasion to wear one so my veil moment has yet to happen. I digress, though. This is about Vanessa. I was surprised to see H&M dressed quite a few guests last night. I know Topshop has done it in the past but I don’t ever recall seeing H&M on the Met Gala red carpet. Good for them. Seems to be paying off. No one has been on the worst dressed list just yet! And this brings us to our last trend of the night (my favorite color…not) — red.
Rita Ora in Tom Ford
Tom Ford only dresses one girl per red carpet, so it’s pretty exciting to see who it will be each time around. Definitely was not expecting Rita Ora for this one, but I’ll take it. I just found this look so…Red Riding Hood / character out of a storybook. Not my favorite Rita moment.
Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa
POPPY IN POPPIES…how original (and I didn’t realize Marchesa was still happening).
Rose Byrne in Calvin Klein
Girl always brings it.
Kris Jenner in Balmain
Is this a #TBT or did this happen just yesterday?
Jessica Hart in Valentino
These are the types of gowns that just take my breath away (cheesy but true). Like how many hours went into making this one gown? Look at that detail. It’s just incredible! Side note…it looks like the cat is out of the bag 😉
Hailee Steinfeld in Michael Kors
Pretty. Boring. And pretty boring.
Gigi Hadid in Diane Von Furstenberg
That’s it?
Amal Clooney in Maison Margiela Couture
Again with the detail…just fascinating. At least it makes a red gown on the red carpet more interesting (finally!)
Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli Couture
She tends to either look basic on the red carpet or wears something that’s so out of her element, it looks awkward. This is just right. It’s her, it fits perfectly, it’s on-point for this event and overall it’s beautiful, it’s fresh…and it makes me forget how Marnie is actually the worst.
Anna Wintour in Chanel
Anna never dresses over-the-top. She always looks content and like she’s doing the theme justice without ever going too literal. This is a little more avant-garde than she typically goes and you know what I say? GO ON WITH YOUR BAD SELF, ANNA.
