NYFW SS16

We’re now officially 25% of the way through fashion month. Now that we’re done with New York, let’s take a look at NYFW SS16 (New York Fashion Week Spring 2016 for those who dislike abbreviations).

There’s so much packed into one week, and whether or not you’re actually there (at this point with the Internet and social media, it doesn’t even matter) there’s A LOT to take in. So I thought I’d break it down and make it super easy for you to pretend like you made NYFW your bitch this year. Trends, most talked about shows, what member of the Kardashian / Jenner clan actually sat SECOND ROW…and more.

Jason Wu wanting to make it clear that you WILL be wearing ruffles next spring. No ifs, ands or buts.

Rosie Assoulin showed her spring collection in an empty public pool…which was the most interesting part of the collection (sorry Rosie).

Proenza Schouler slayed the runway, as always. Sleek bows, insanely intricate details, exposed shoulders and a new pointed toe flat I am very interested in…

One of the most talked about shows (even before it debuted) was Yeezy Season 2. Considering the fact that it’s Kanye (meaning [almost] every Kardashian / Jenner will be present), it was a “secret” show, and season one got quite the mixed reviews…everyone couldn’t wait to see what was in store for spring. And will you look at that? Looks exactly like season 1. As Cathy Horn says, “[it] looked a lot like Spanx” and “because [people in fashion] wouldn’t bother with this stuff if it were offered by an unknown, and if it’s the spectacle they seek, it changes as little as the clothes.” You said it Cathy.

Oh and Kendall Jenner sat second row. ?

For Alexander Wang’s 10th anniversary, he thought he’d show us that it’s not just the ladies that love his clothes. Plus, we can’t deny that pajama dressing and fringe are both still strong next season. Don’t forget it.

You’d think Nili Lotan is new on the scene because you’ve been hearing more and more about her (I’m no exception) but she’s actually had her line since ’03. Not sure what the sudden buzz is but whatever she’s doing, she’s doing it RIGHT.

Prabal Gurung also showing the new fringe (meaning not so suede / 70s / western, as we’ve seen in the last few seasons). The color palette was quite similar to spring 2011. I’m not opposed, but don’t think I didn’t notice, Prabal!

Rodarte kills it in the hair accessory department once again. If this doesn’t want to make you decorate your locks, I don’t know what will!

Brandon Maxwell (AKA Lady Gaga’s stylist) debuted his first collection this fashion week. This is the total opposite of what I was expecting — sleek, sophisticated, fairly simple actually. Some looks were a little demure for my taste but overall, BRAVO.

Altuzarra showed two of spring 16’s biggest trends (at least so far) — tie dye and orange. Yes orange actually is the new black next season! The tie dye effect is an interesting one, and you’ll see more of it in today’s post. And that look on the right? I see a red carpet in its near future!

Misha Nonoo doesn’t need a secret venue, or an over-the-top runway, or even a star-studded front row. She just needs social media…yes, she showed her SS16 collection ON INSTAGRAM. See? Who needs fashion week anyway??

Marc Jacobs closed out fashion week, as per usual, last night. He was actually forced out of his typical venue, as someone got to it first, so he decided to show at the Ziegfeld theater. The show was a theatrical approach to American fashion (complete with a red carpet and popcorn). Although not my favorite color palette (sorry ‘Merica), it was still quite the spectacle. And we expect nothing less!

Besides Yeezy, I’d say Givenchy was tied with the most talked about show (even before the show date). Givenchy was not only showing in New York for the first time but even opened up attendance to the public (if you signed up online quickly enough to score a ticket). If that wasn’t enough…Riccardo Tisci showed Spring 2016 (re: Kendall Jenner), menswear AND couture (hello bejeweld faces!) all in one show. BOW DOWN TO MR. TISCI.

Also a big deal this fashion week, Spring 2016 was Public School’s Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow’s first DKNY collection. It didn’t necessarily receive the best reviews (there were a lot of pinstripes), I think it’s the coolest DKNY has looked in a while so I’m not giving up on Maxwell and Dao-Yi just yet (or ever…I love them).

Baja East is one of those brands that you don’t hear much about, yet it seems like everyone was talking about them this NYFW. Just more proof that tie dye will indeed be happening next spring…and hopefully, FANNY PACKS.

BCBG not only sent a hodgepodge of clothing down the runway, but each model was topped with a bucket hat. You know I love a good hat…but not of the bucket variety (at least not post 1995).

If you needed even more evidence that orange and fringe are happening — see Dion Lee. Side note, how great is that weird line-down-the-face beauty look? Kind of obsessed (almost an extension of Alexander Wang SS13, no?)

Calvin Klein showed one of my favorite SS16 collections this year. Was not expecting prints, sequins or body chains to ever come from Calvin Klein but hey…FASHUN IS FULL OF SURPRISES.

So that’s a wrap for NYFW SS16. Be sure to let me know your favorite moments / highlights / Yeezy thoughts, in the comments.

PS. I guess I can’t keep this to myself any longer. I have made it pretty clear over the last few years that I have “retired” from NYFW, however I was actually there last weekend. Why I was there actually had nothing to do with ChiCityFashion but for my new gig (which is not co-host of Fashion Police, although that would be baller). About a month ago, I started working with Giuliana Rancic on her G by Giuliana line for HSN, and that’s why I was in New York. Because of this, though, I will be taking a slight step back from ChiCityFashion. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while (as blogging for six years and full time for over three can get a little exhausting) so this seems like the right time to do it. Don’t think I’m going to leave you hanging! But if you see 3-4 blog posts a week instead of 5, now you know why 🙂
