Is Moscow The New Paris?

Fashion Weeks happen all over the world, but we mostly just pay attention to the big four — New York, London, Paris and Milan (and maybe a few others like Australia and Copenhagen in between). Now did you know there was a Russia Fashion Week (and it’s been going on for 15 years)? Neither did I. But with street style stars like Miroslava Duma and Elena Perminova becoming household names and designers like Ulyana Sergeenko and Vika Gazinskaya on the rise…it’s time we take notice of the fashion happening in Russia.

Whether it’s Russian designers, Russia street style, or just the overall creative vibe…I’m very interested in what’s going on here. Just last week, the president and co-founder of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, Alexander Shumsky, announced the launch of the Russian Fashion Council (which will sort of be like the CFDA, as a program to help emerging designers develop their business). With initiatives like this, it’s only the beginning of the Russian fashion empire that could one day be up there with the big four.

Now like I mentioned with the street style stars and designers, having these big names from Russia also helps the country’s street cred. Would anyone have paid attention to Russia Fashion Week if it weren’t for Miroslava Duma? I don’t know…but I’m glad they’re getting some credit now.

With MBFW Russia coming to a close yesterday, I thought this would be the perfect time to share some of my favorite street style photos from last week’s festivities…and perhaps get you in the mood for some cold weather fashion.
