Oh hey summer, how nice of you to show up…it’s about damn time (we are half way through June after all). Now that it seems like we’ll have consistently warm weather (at least for the next week or so) I think it’s time we discuss summer essentials.
Because I have a lot to say in this category, this will be part 1 of 2 (or maybe 3..who knows, really?)
Let’s start off with the controversial leather for summer, specifically leather shorts. Would I recommend them in 100+ degrees with 100% humidity? Probably not, but how often does that happen? I prefer my leather shorts to be on the loose side for summer (although I prefer most of my clothing in general to be on the looser side) so these Helmut Lang drawstring shorts are a great option. If you’re animal-friendly/a member of PETA (which in that case, I don’t recommend reading this blog) or looking for a budget-friendly option, go for the Black Shadow faux leather shorts.
I’m all about prints all year round, but they’re especially appropriate in the summer. We’ve seen big trends in both mixing and matching prints but I almost think it makes a bigger statement going matching. I’ve already got the printed shorts suit down but for warmer weather, a matching printed tank + shorts is a better option. I love this top and shorts from J.W Anderson (and they both happen to be on sale right now…just an FYI). I like to call this a two-fer look, because you could get use out of it for both day and night. I’d pair with flat sandals or oxfords for day and wedges or a chunky heel for night.
Although the “no white after Labor Day” rule no longer exists, summer is prime time for a white clutch. Marni happens to be killing it in this category…of course you can’t go wrong with Proenza Schouler or Saint Laurent (both on sale, which doesn’t hurt either). If you really want to be daring, I love an all white look (including the clutch) with a red lip or a statement necklace. And if you’re looking for more all white inspiration, this should be able to help.
Whether it’s pants, shorts, or a skirt, I am all about everything high-waisted. It’s much more slimming than you’d think, especially if you style it the right way. Pairing something high-waisted with a fitted tucked in shirt or a crop top are your best options. If you see me around this summer, there’s a very good chance I’ll be in my high-waisted Rag & Bone shorts from 2010, along with a cropped shirt of some sort. Whether it’s day or night, I will be in this look. Trust me. If you’re in the market for this summer essential, there’s a really awesome floral print Lashes of London crop top on ASOS right now that I am all about. Just remember, if I find you wearing a crop top with anything low rise (or even mid-rise) I will embarrass you. I promise.
One thing I’ve been on the hunt for the last month or so is some type of sandal/closed-toe flat hybrid. This is because when I attend street festivals and outdoor concerts, the last thing I want is to expose my feet to who knows what. I’ve had the same pair of cut-out MIA flats for years. They need to retire, ASAP and I think I’ve found their replacement — cut out oxfords. Dolce Vita makes a great pair in both black and bone. I’m really into both colors, although the black is probably the better option when attending festivals.
Last but not least, I will not bore you with this one because it’s something I just talked about on Friday…statement sunglasses. I guess sunglasses in general are a summer essential but it’s more fun when they’re a little crazy, right? Linda Farrow is my go-to for something statement-worthy, although ASOS has a pretty good selection of funky shades too.
