Red Carpet Fashion: 2011 Oscars (Part 1)

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards (or the Oscars if you will) were held last night at the Kodak Theatre. I thought Anne Hathaway and James Franco made a great team hosting the event (they definitely made it “hip” as intended). People won, people lost, but most importantly…there was a lot of red carpet coverage.

Let’s see who got it right, who almost got it, and who I just didn’t get…

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Spring 2011 Couture

At first, the circular detail in the front confused me, but it’s one of those dresses that the more I look at it, the more I love it. She has that simple look to her where she could pull something off like this. And I think it’s perfection. A Givenchy Couture dress can be a risk in itself but she definitely pulled it off. One of my favorites from the night!

Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott Fall 2011

This is the best she has looked on the red carpet in a long time. I guess when you’re nominated for best supporting actress at the Oscars, you gotta step up your game. I love the color, the silhouette is perfection, the slit adds a little sexiness, and I think the hair and makeup is great. My only problem is the necklace…it’s just not necessary, but otherwise it’s amazing!

Anne Hathaway in Valentino Fall 2002 Couture

I love Anne Hathaway. She rarely makes a red carpet mistake (maybe because her stylist is the super fabulous celeb stylist, Rachel Zoe). I was very surprised to see an archived gown (that wasn’t technically vintage) from her, but she definitely pulled it off. Anne looks even better than the original model who wore this dress, and I think it works. I’m never a fan of red on the red carpet but it’s Anne and she can do no wrong.

Florence Welch in Valentino Spring 2011 Couture

This is her look and I wouldn’t want her to dress is anything that wasn’t “her,” but she could have chosen something that wasn’t this matronly. This look would be perfect for a woman age 60+ but not for a young celeb like Florence. Even in her Givenchy Couture dress she wore to the Grammys, the sheerness of the bottom and in the sleeves gave it some sex appeal but this Valentino dress is just way too covered up.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein

When I first saw her on the red carpet, I wasn’t 100% sold…but about one minute later I was completely hooked. It’s an interesting neckline, the liquid effect of this dress looks amazing on her, and I think the stick-straight hair is perfect for this dress. I saw a close up of the earrings and they were huge, looked like some kind of animal, but I kind of loved them. My only comment is that the brooch at the hips is not doing anything for me.

Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa

First of all, I thought it was so cute she helped design this dress. I heard she was wearing Marchesa before I saw her on the red carpet and I wasn’t sure if the choice would be age appropriate for her, but this is so perfect for Hailee. She looks like a little princess and I just love it. I think she’s adorable but I cannot get past the headband! If she had a cute little jeweled Jennifer Behr piece, she would be one of my best dressed picks. But that headband looks like she picked it up at Walgreens in a 3-pack on the way to the awards!

Halle Berry in Marchesa

Can you look at Halle Berry and say she looks bad? Just try to look at her and say “ew.” You can’t. She look stunning. This dress is beautiful. It looks a little disheveled at the bottom but I’m not totally hating that aspect. It’s Halle Berry. That is all you need to know.

Hillary Swank in Gucci

This one is difficult for me to judge, because I think Hillary looks beautiful, I am in love with this dress (I live for feathers) but I don’t like them together. I just don’t think a metallic beaded dress with feathers is very Hillary Swank. I would have loved this dress on someone like Anne Hathaway but it just doesn’t feel Swanky to me.

Jennifer Hudson in Atelier Versace Spring 2008 Couture

Remember when I said I don’t like red on the red carpet? Well this is orange/red. And I still don’t like it. She looks gorgeous and confident, which is always important, but I know she can do better than this. And pairing this with purple shoes? That is something I just don’t understand.

Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein

As I’ve mentioned before, I normally do not like red on the red carpet (or ever…red dresses can easily look tacky). I am also not one for minimalism. When it comes to accessorizing, I live by “the more, the merrier.” But you know what? Surprisingly, I love this look. Maybe because this dress fits her PERFECTLY. Maybe because the hair and makeup is stunning. Maybe both? Just gorgeous.

Red Carpet Fashion: 2011 Grammys (Part 2)

Julianne Hough in Malandrino

Standard Malandrino silhouette. Love the print. She looks gorgeous. But I expect something a little more “amped up” for the Grammys red carpet. I also still can’t get over her dating Ryan Seacrest.

: Katy Perry in Giorgio Armani

Katy, didn’t anyone tell you the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was in December? You’re a few months too late…

Kelly Osbourne in Tadashi Shoji

I wanted to like this because I’ve really been loving Kelly Osbourne lately but that color purple, with ruffles, and a ribbon tie at the waist is just too “high school dance” for me. I think she looks gorgeous but I just don’t love the dress in that color.

Kim Kardashian in Kaufman Franco

Legs. Boobs. Sequins. Makeup. It’s a little “showgirly” for me but it’s Kim Kardashian…do we expect anything less?

: Lea Michele in Emilio Pucci

Lea Michele would have to do something fashionably offensive for me to hate on her look. I would have liked a bolder shoe here but I love the cut of the dress, especially the detail at the waist, and I love that sultry berry color lipgloss. Wish they showed more of her on the Grammys red carpet.

Miley Cyrus in Roberto Cavalli

Whoever said that too long of extensions were in? (see Jennifer Lopez ) The dress looks tacky, there’s side boob, there are wayyyyy too many bracelets and it’s wayyyyyy too much with that sparkly dress. And pardon me for being bitchy, but it definitely looks like Miley’s been getting the late night munchies if you catch my drift…

Nicki Minaj in Givenchy

The next Gaga. Meaning…she can do no wrong.

Nicole Kidman in Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011 Couture

Not the biggest Nicole Kidman fan and I probably would have hated this dress on anyone else but the colors, the fit and the silhouette totally work for her. I hate to say it but I really don’t find anything wrong with this look.

Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2011 Couture

Probably one of the riskiest dresses you could wear on the red carpet (which is why I had to provide a side shot as well), Rihanna pulls it off well. What can I say? It literally hits her in the “right spots” to hide what needs to be hidden, and her stylist definitely provided her with the perfect undergarments for this specific dress. A lot of people hated her hair mostly. I kind of loved it though. This dress on this girl at this event…totally works.

Selena Gomez in J. Mendel

Pretty dress on a pretty girl. I’d like to see her do something a little edgier or fashion forward for the red carpet. She’s young, she’s gorgeous so why not? But if it’s not her thing, I wouldn’t push it. That’s the type of stuff that sends you to rehab… (cue Lindsay Lohan jokes)

Red Carpet Fashion: 2011 SAG Awards (Part 1)

The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were yesterday and the Red Carpet looks were pretty overall…but not much more than that. I definitely thought the Golden Globes looks (see Golden Globes Fashion part 1 and part 2) were far superior but that is also a bigger awards show than the SAGs.

The photos say it all so now it’s time to judge.

Angie Harmon in Monique Lhuillier

It’s a little “pretty pink princess” (with feathers) but it’s a beautiful dress. It would have been a better option for the Oscars…it’s just not SAG appropriate. But I have to say…she is gorgeous regardless.

Claire Danes in Louis Vuitton

I don’t hate it but I don’t love it either. It reminds me a lot of what Jennifer Lawrence wore to the Golden Globes a few weeks ago (most likely because that was Louis Vuitton as well). All I can say is that I’ve seen better and I’ve seen worse.

Annette Bening in Tony Ward Couture Fall 2010

For a woman in her 50’s to look this good and this confident on the red carpet is remarkable. It’s a stunning dress that could work on a girl in her 20’s all the way up to a woman in her 50’s. This was one of my favorite looks from the night.

Christina Hendricks in L'Wren Scott Fall 2010

I really just hate everything she wears on the red carpet. It’s always unflattering in some way, shape or form and I just don’t know what to do with her anymore. It’s too heavy on the top, the makeup isn’t great and I am not feeling the shoes.

Dianna Agron in Vintage Chanel couture

It is not easy to pull off this hemline but she is working this look! I love the hair…it’s sleek but a little messy (in a good way). The slightly smoky eye with the pink lip complements the dress perfectly. Overall this is a great look for her and the perfect dress for this kind of awards show.

Hailee Steinfeld in Prada Spring 2011

Not many people can pull off horizontal stripes, multicolor stripes or anything from the Prada Spring 2011 collection on the red carpet but WOW did Hailee look AWESOME. It was a bold choice but it totally worked for her. Loved the hair…perfectly cute and relaxed. Overall perfection! I am very impressed with this girl’s red carpet choices…I can’t wait to see what she wears at the Oscars!

Heather Morris in Romona Keveza Resort 2010

I love Glee but I don’t always love the cast’s red carpet choices (except for Lea Michele of course). Heather Morris is one of them I usually don’t love. This is the best she has looked on the RC so far. It’s not easy to pull off that shade of nude with her particular hair color and skintone but it’s super flattering and I love the detailing in the bodice.

Helena Bonham Carter in Marc Jacobs

She’s normally an interesting site to see at these types of events but she definitely toned it down for the SAGs. I actually love this dress and it looks fantastic on her. The shoes are perfect. My only comment (which should be obvious) is the hair. But she had to add some of her Helen Bohnam Carterness to the look so I won’t complain.

January Jones in Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2011

This is a big change from the red fringed boobalicious Versace dress she wore to the Golden Globes. I can’t decide if I love or hate the dress. I can decide that I hate the hair. I really do not like the hair. I think I’ve decided I hate the dress.

Red Carpet Fashion: 2011 Golden Globe Awards (Part 2)

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

I thought I was dreaming when I saw Angelina step on the Red Carpet in COLOR. I mean, this is truly a historical moment. Let’s all embrace this…and hope she continues to wear more color on the RC because she looks stunning in this emerald green. Go Angie!

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive

Let me start off by saying you cannot go wrong with Armani Prive. You have to have a really terrible stylist to make Armani Prive look bad. Thankfully, Anne has a really awesome stylist (who happens to be Rachel Zoe) therefore this dress on this girl was fool-proof. Absolutely gorgeous. Perfection from head-to-toe. Best dressed of the night.

Christina Hendricks in Ramona Kaveza

I understand it is not easy to find a suitable dress for a woman with a large chest, but she makes the WORST choices when it comes to the red carpet. It’s like someone with linebacker shoulders wearing a halter top! I’m also not a fan of the red dress, with the red carpet AND the red hair. Plus the frizzy hair so close to the ruffled shoulder is all wrong.

Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan

She tends to look angry and a bit frumpy on the Red Carpet but she really got this right. Although it was one of the many green dresses on the RC last night, Elisabeth really rocked this look. Love the detailing in the bodice, it’s a beautiful shade of green and she looks really happy and confident. Always a plus!

Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung

I had no idea who this was because I haven’t seen True Grit, nor do I care to see movies with such a drab color scheme, but I am definitely keeping this girl on my radar. Young girls often go too mature or too childish on the red carpet and her overall look was perfectly age appropriate. I also love me some Prabal on the RC 🙂

Jennifer Lawrence in Louis Vuitton

It wasn’t my favorite of the night but it works for her. She looks pretty. It’s nice to see some Louis Vuitton on the Red Carpet. But that’s about it.

Julianne Moore in Lanvin

Officially convinced Julianne’s goal is to be on the worst dressed list at every event. Well congrats Ms. Moore…you win! [for worst dressed of the night]

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta

I would have hated this dress on anyone else but it totally works for her. The color and ruffles are youthful but the silhouette is sophisticated, so for a young woman like her it’s perfect. She always surprises us on the Red Carpet (which I love) so she gets an IN from me.

Leighton Meester in Burberry

Okay so I know a lot of people hated this but if you have seen Leighton’s previous Red Carpet choices, you should be bowing down to her for choosing this dress (trust me, it could have been much worse). I actually love this dress. I would definitely wear it. Love the slit. LOVE the bag. And I can’t wait for new episodes of Gossip Girl.

Olivia Wilde in Marchesa

First to arrive on the Red Carpet, and I couldn’t stop thinking about this dress throughout the night. A lot of people said it was too much. She’s a young, GORGEOUS, talented actress and she’s at a prestigious awards show in Beverly Hills…there is no such thing as too much. I am obsessed with this dress and I’m obsessed with Olivia in this dress.

PS. If you know where I can get Olivia’s gold spiked Christian Louboutin shoes, tell me…because I need them

Red Carpet Fashion: 2011 Golden Globe Awards (Part 1)

If you didn’t watch the Golden Globes last night, you didn’t miss much. If you didn’t watch the Red Carpet, you missed a lot…one of the best I’ve seen in a while actually. That doesn’t mean I don’t have any worst dressed picks…because I do.

Claire Danes in Calvin Klein

I applaud her for trying this pink color, because it’s not an easy color to pull off. However, it does remind me of my Barbie accessories from childhood.

Emma Stone in Calvin Klein

First of all, I thought this was Kate Bosworth for the first few minutes. Then I put my glasses on and realized it was Emma Stone. I want to like this. I really do. But either her hair, her skin or the dress has to be a different color. I can barely make out the difference between the 3.

January Jones in Versace

Being the face of Versace, there was no doubt in my mind January would wear Versace…specifically something from Spring 2011. That fringe-filled collection was beautiful but I didn’t think I would see much of it on the Red Carpet. I hated this when I first saw it on her but it’s starting to grow on me. She chose the right hair and makeup for the look. It’s a lot of chest but it works. I also always applaud a risk taker!

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Romona Keveza

Prom 2001…topped off with beehive hair-do.

Julie Bowen in Tadashi Yoshi

I actually love this dress. It’s a lot of ruffle but the silhouette looks fantastic on her. My only comment is that a slightly darker version of this would look better with her skintone and hair color.

Michelle Williams in Valentino

If this made anyone’s best dressed list, I have lost all hope in fashion. Daisies on the red carpet are a big NO. This may work to a ladies-who-lunch garden party…but that is the ONLY time it would work.

Mila Kunis in Vera Wang

I love the green on her, even though it was kind of over done last night, but the hair ages her a little. I was also sick of the French Twist hair-do about 15 minutes in to the Red Carpet coverage. Overall, she looks pretty.

Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham

I love you Sandy but none of this made sense. Even if the faux bangs were of appropriate length, the stick straight hair was way too harsh with the lightness of this dress. It’s a pretty dress but I would have rather seen it on someone like Dianna Agron (especially so she’ll stop wearing Carolina Herrera and other “mature” designers).

Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander

I don’t understand this woman. She looks like a creature from Lord of the Rings. With or without the Jil Sander ensemble.
