Taylor Swift is one of those celebrities that, like Anne Hathaway, everyone seems to hate but I’ve always felt indifferent about. The only real opinion I had was about her style, which consisted of only nude sparkly dresses for quite a few years (and clearly wasn’t blowing my mind). But now that she’s all grown up (sort of), I no longer shake my head at what she wears, and she released her first pop album just yesterday (that literally everyone is talking about…so I thought I’d chime in), it hit me and I can’t believe I’m admitting it but…
I think I like Taylor Swift.
Does this make me basic? Perhaps I haven’t fully recovered. I don’t know. But what I do know is that I am constantly dancing to Shake It Off (even when it’s not playing) and I don’t hate it. Her new album, 1989 (okay thanks for making everyone born before 1989 feel bad about themselves for not being super rich and famous at this point in their lives) honestly all sort of sounds the same, it’s damn catchy…and I’m sort of into it. I mean, have you heard Welcome to New York? I can just see myself walking around Meatpacking with Jeffrey shopping bags in hand with that song playing in the background just feeling like nothing can stop me. Taylor, WHAT IS THIS SPELL YOU HAVE ON ME? But it was even before this album came out that I started to like her. Between this (which I think is pure genius) and her evolving style (and evolving in a good way), am I actually a Taylor Swift fan? Me?
Well let’s go back to the days, pre-“I might like Taylor Swift” status.
Like when she wore her hair in the most terrible ringlet curls in a non-ironic way.
And tried to dress to the theme of Disney movies. Exhibit A: The Little Mermaid.
Exhibit B: Beauty and the Beast.
This is where we get to some better dresses but then we ended up seeing those dresses over and over and over again for the next two or so years (if it’s nude and/or sparkly, Taylor HAS to have it).
Soon after, she started wearing “more interesting” nude sparkly dresses (which I even praised her for back in 2012)
Then we get into this whole dressing like she’s she’s going to a luncheon moment (a luncheon where each ticket’s cost is equivalent to a pair of Alaias and it benefits some sort of museum).
In 2013, Taylor finally starts to take more risks (remember when she went “punk” for the Met Ball?)
Even in something like this for the 2013 Golden Globes (which I wasn’t a fan of but actually a lot of people were).
For the 2013 AMAs I had one of those so close yet so far moments. I thought we were heading somewhere with Taylor’s style evolution, then she pulled this…and only three letters come to mind — WTF? (but if you saw what she wore to the 2013 VMAs, you’d be like hells yes).
Fast forward to 2014 and I feel like we’ve finally gotten somewhere (because all the sudden in this evolution, Taylor and I decided we’re on this journey together). You know she likes to keep it sophisticated and that’s her style which you have to let her do, but she’s dressing more age appropriate (no luncheon looks in sight…yay!)
I pretty much freaked out over her Grammys dress this year. I didn’t love the hair but the dress was KILLER.
But what really makes me like Taylor Swift (besides a few catchy songs)? Her real girl street style. You can’t always judge celebrity style based on red carpet events and although it’s not necessarily my taste in clothes, Tay is WERKING those streets.

So between this video, those last three outfits and the fact that I’m constantly shaking it off (oh and we can’t forget that Kanye moment) I admit it…I LIKE TAYLOR SWIFT, OKAY? Awkward awards show dance moves and all. I’m not 14 years old. I’m not a cat person. And I’m definitely not a fan of country music. But you know what ya’ll? I dig the girl (at least when it comes to fashion…which is usually all I care about when it comes to celebrities anyway).
What about you? Are you a fan of Taylor Swift? If not her music, what about her style? Is it embarrassing to admit I like her? I haven’t decided yet.

I had a similar evolution with Tay about a year ago. I sort of liked “You belonged with me”, but everything else was to country and weird. And then I started liking a handful of her songs from the Red album, and I noticed how amazing she is on social media (have you seen her Tumblr?) and now I pretty much love every song on 1989. She hooked me.
