There’s a first time for everything, right? Like my first go at culottes, being a bridesmaid newb, making a bagel sandwich that one time, and now talking about the Tony Awards red carpet. Not one I’m typically interested in discussing, but when you have names like Jennifer Lopez, Monica Lewinsky, Bella Hadid, Joseph Altuzarra, Kendall Jenner, Ashley Tisdale, Ivanka Trump, Larry David, Hamish Bowles, and Anna Wintour (to name a few) on ONE red carpet…you have to be somewhat interested, right? Well I sure was. And here are the results.
Taylor Schilling in Michael Kors
I’ve voiced my opinion many times before about my feelings towards nude illusion fabric (found most often on JLo, although we’ll get to that in a moment) so I won’t go there again (okay fine I hate it). The placement of this sheer fabric is just a bad idea. It’s the dark fabric you’d want at the waist to bring it all in, and because that’s not the case this somehow makes her look wide. SOMEHOW TAYLOR SCHILLING LOOKS WIDE. That’s hard to do. For that reason, I’m so not on board with this (another reason is the hair but I’m so pumped for OITNB season 3 I can’t file any more complaints).

What is this, the CFDA Awards?
Emily Ratajkowski in Marc Jacobs
She’s one of the few celebrities that I find so stunning, I barely notice what she wears (and I always notice what everyone wears). I appreciate the navy but other than that, it’s nothing special.
UPDATE: After seeing this Instagram from Moda Operandi, I see this dress is INDEED something special. The side detail is killer. Clearly I need to look at more angles of everything before I make my decisions because this was hands down best dressed at the Tony’s. And another thanks to Moda Operandi for making this dress available to everyone (who has over $2k to spare on a gown…it is on sale though!)
Bee Shaffer in Marc Jacobs
Not opposed…
Carey Mulligan in Balenciaga
As much as I dislike strapless, I hate it less when it’s at least a more unique strapless silhouette (like this Balenciaga dress). But overall, it’s not exciting, it’s not all that flattering and I AM SO BORED.
Bella Hadid in Prabal Gurung
Speaking of bored, when I first saw this I thought pretty but boring. Then I did a little Insta-stalking and saw the back and let’s just say I became less bored.
Constance Jablonski in Wes Gordon
Since when did the Tony’s become a model-filled event complete with designers we only see on red carpets like the Met Gala and CFDA Awards? Not hating it (although I am sort of hating this dress which pains me to say as I adore Wes Gordon!)
Jennifer Lopez in Valentino Couture
Back to that nude illusion material that we see JLo wearing on every red carpet…and I complain about it every time / encourage her to try something different. She tried something different, and it’s pretty but it’s weird to see her in a dress like this. I know I don’t particularly like over-the-top sparkly and revealing JLo but maybe she just needs to stick to over-the-top sparkly and revealing JLo. Sorry I ever steered you wrong, Jenny. You do you. And I’ll continue to complain about your nude mesh.
Rose Byrne in Delpozo
I almost always love what Rose Byrne wears on the red carpet. She’s never afraid to take a risk and I appreciate that. But with what you know about me and the color red, you know I can’t praise this. The dress is fine (although Delpozo is known for doing such amazing detailed garments that this is really nothing for them) but with the red shoes AND the red lip (and the red carpet!) I am on red overload and that is just not for me.
Ashley Tisdale in Solace
The first image I came across of her look was a side view with her legs together and it just looked like a top ruffle dress (which you can imagine…I wasn’t a fan of). When I see it from this angle, it looks much more chic. Considering the length of the pants, though, it’s not executed all that well. But I dig the choker, and you know I love pants on the red carpet so it’s definitely not a worst dressed situation!
Vanessa Hudgens in Naeem Khan
High School Musical happened almost ten years ago but I guess that doesn’t stop Ashley and Vanessa from hitting up the Tony’s! About the dress, though…I like the idea of a printed dress on the red carpet but it’s very rarely done right. This is exhibit A.
Joan Smalls in Givenchy
This is a printed dress [almost] done right. I loathe ruching, and it’s disappointing Riccardo would even create a dress with that detail. But other than that (as the ruching isn’t all that obvious), it’s cool…but we’ve seen her do much better. Clearly no one gives a shit at the Tony’s.
Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein
Definitely an interesting choice of color and fabric. At certain angles this looks like velvet and others it appears to be sequins. It must be a type of matte sequins because Calvin Klein confirmed on Instagram, it’s indeed a sequin dress. My feelings towards this are similar to how I felt about her Calvin Klein number from Cannes (discussed in Fashion Friends Episode 3) — I want to like it but there’s something keeping me from doing so…just can’t figure out what. Maybe the next time she wears Calvin Klein on the red carpet I’ll have an answer for you.
Grace Mahary in Public School, pictured with Dao-Yi Chow & Maxwell Osborne
Literally, this feels like the CFDA Awards. Not mad about it. Just confused. Super cool to see Public School on the red carpet at a non-fashion event. The look seems a little casual for the Tony’s (at least compared to what everyone else is wearing) but I’m still into it.
Amber Valletta in Anthony Vaccarello
NOT just because I refuse to wear anything with only one shoulder, I find this to be the opposite of fashion-forward (so, fashion backward?) and overall it looks outdated. Plus, those shoes make me cringe. YIKES.
Amanda Seyfried in Oscar de la Renta
Despise the eye makeup. Like the dress but I prefer her in something a little funkier. Want the shoes.
Hilary Rhoda in Michael Kors
Usually models kill it on the red carpet but Hilary never seems to get the “killin’ it” memo.
Elisabeth Moss in Oscar de la Renta
You know when you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all? I really don’t have anything nice to say.
Ashley Greene in Jason Wu
That time Ashley Greene took us back to 2004…
Kristin Chenoweth in Zac Posen
It’s not the Tony Awards without Kristin Chenoweth! Although it’s not a dress I’d pick for myself, it’s perfect for her petite body type, on-point for the occasion and the minimal styling just works.

And I guess it took me to this point to realize I don’t even have a best dressed pick and I basically hated on everyone. Sorry to be a negative Nancy (or a Bitchy Brenda, which I prefer) however, I cannot tell a lie and I love to talk red carpet. So what’s a girl to do?
Did you have any favorite looks from the Tony Awards? Least favorite? Does anyone even watch the Tony Awards?
