Winter pastels are no new thing. They were really big a couple of years ago, then the trend died down a bit, however it’s still cool to lighten up once the temperatures drop. But the question is…how practical is it? Would you wear pastel pants with six inches of snow on the ground?
I love the idea of pastels in winter because that color family is something typically reserved for spring, so it’s refreshing to see them in a different season. But there are a few things to consider, like the weather (a key component to getting dressed, especially when you live in Chicago). Right now, we have a decent amount of snow on the streets. Because it’s still FREEZING, it hasn’t turned into slush just yet. I cannot recommend wearing anything light colored during those rain / sleet / snowy days (unless you just don’t give a shit about your clothes and in that case, you do you). However, if there’s just a few inches of powder on the ground, I think you’re safe to wear your pastel gear.
The easiest way to incorporate pastels into your winter wardrobe is finding sweaters and outerwear in lavender, periwinkle, aqua, mint, etc. I’m not saying you have to switch out your winter neutrals for Easter egg colors but a blush coat never hurt anyone, right?
One of the main reasons pastels probably aren’t “meant” for winter is the fact that our tans go away and we don’t all necessarily look good in light colors during this time of year. If you’re an avid spray tanner, have naturally dark skin or happen to jet set somewhere warm right about now, then it’s easier to get away with this color palette. I’m not saying pastels are out of the question if you have fair skin, but you know what looks good on you so just take that into consideration. Plus, there’s various shades of pastels, ranging from dull / powdery to more vibrant so going for the hues towards the vibrant side should eliminate most skin clashes.
Last, what exactly should you be wearing with pastels? Do you have to wear them head-to-toe? Absolutely not (although I applaud you if you go that route).
The more vibrant pastels don’t look great with dark colors like black and graphite. So pairing with light denim or a light neutral (like grey or cream) gives you a more balanced look. Take note from my girl, Chiara.
But if you go for the dull pastels, it’s easier to pair with black (which is my go-to).
And if a mint sweater or periwinkle coat scares you when it’s 10 degrees, try a pastel accessory like a handbag.
Overall, if you’re looking for the easiest way to go about this, I’d stick to those blush-almost-tan colors or blue-almost-grey hues as those are the easiest to style. You don’t have to think about matching with other colors, as they’re pretty much neutral, yet you’re doing something different from the typical darks we rely on to get us through the winter.

If you’re on board with pastels for winter, then look no further…
Are you into winter pastels? If so, how would you wear them? If not, feel free to rant about your hatred for baby blue knits. I won’t be offended…
