Throwback Thursday: I Love the New Millennium

I have a love/hate relationship with the early 2000s — love because it reminds me of middle school and high school (and it’s always fun to reminisce about the good old days) but hate due to it being one of the worst moments in fashion history…at least in my opinion. And because what goes around comes around, some of these popular styles from the time are making a comeback for spring 2015. Yes, our worst nightmare is coming true (and no, it’s not Amanda Bynes driving a car within 100 feet of you).

early 2000s fashion

Ah, nothing says Y2K like some shiny fabric, spaghetti straps and kitten heels.

We love when pretty much any other decade comes back into style because we can dress all boho-chic for the 60s, get sparkly and wild for the 70s, go into wide silhouettes and bright colors for the 80s, we all know the 90s have been back for a while now…so of course it’s time for the early 2000s to make its way back into our lives, right? (I was hoping to be wrong). I always thought I wouldn’t still be alive when these styles came back (they were so bad, you’d think it would take at least five decades before they’d become popular again) but apparently fashion moves faster than I thought.

So who exactly is responsible for this revival?

gucci spring 2015

This cropped pants with tall boots thing was awful when it was happening and has not gotten any better. I’m not crazy surprised by this, only because cropped pants / culottes have been so popular but this pairing is just not okay. Even if it’s Gucci and costs more than a month’s worth of outfits. NOT. OKAY.

jean paul gaultier spring 2015

Those triangle tops? I guess Jean Paul Gaultier really wanted to go out with a bang for his last show and incorporate one of the new Millennium’s most regrettable silhouettes (especially those with a completely open back…like why did those ever exist?)

acne, spring 2015

Y2K (give or take a few years) was really all about unnecessary and unflattering pockets. And Acne is bringing it back for spring 2015. Perfect for the iPhone 6 plus.

spring 2015 trend

And what else is Acne bringing back? TOWEL DRESSES. Remember those Juicy Couture ones? (even better when paired with Moccasin boots) This is like a more acceptable version but still not exactly what I have in mind when I think of purchasing a dress. When it comes to clothing and towels, there should be no two-fer category.

Those are just a few examples of early 2000s styles resurfacing. I just need to reiterate that all photos on the left were from this most recent fashion week and not 2004. I can’t say I’m into it but if you’re looking to make some regrettable fashion decisions or just want to be on trend for spring 2015 — get your off-the-shoulder ruffled crop top, your low rise flare jeans, your ridiculously high platform shoes (or the complete opposite — kitten heels) and your butterfly hair clips ready…because it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
