Cool Mules

In the last couple of years, slide sandals have been trending, mules have made a comeback…so it was only a matter of time before we put the two together to get this.

Flat mules / backless flats / slip-on flats / shoes with no heel and no back…whatever you want to call them…they are happening. And you can thank Gucci for that.

From my personal observations, I didn’t see much of this style (besides maybe a little Jenni Kayne here and there) before Gucci’s Fall ’15 collection and the furry slippers AKA the Princetown mule. They are literally the new Isabel Marant sneaker wedge…ugly and trendy (but we still love them…except I never liked sneakers wedges…and I don’t fully oppose the Gucci’s).

What I like to call “fugly shoe trends” have been in full force for almost two years now. So it’s no surprise to see something like this surface in the world of footwear. It’s not the prettiest shoe, but it’s kinda cool, pretty casual and overall…very easy to wear. No laces. No backs. No fuss. But still…ALL THE FUN.

So what’s the next step if you’re looking to add some flat mules to your life? First, make sure you find an updated style. Although technically a flat mule, your mom’s Donald J Pliner’s do not count (no offense to DJP).

Now, what to wear with? Cropped pants are definitely your best bet. Most of these styles have some what of a pointed toe (or at least they’re not super round) which means legs appear a bit longer…without having to deal with heels!

For spring / summer, I’m down for doing this with a dress as well, but for the current time of year (considering it’s technically boot season) I would stick to pants. This would also look totally amazing with a stylish suit (velvet perhaps?) or dressing it down with a chunky knit. No matter how you decide to wear them, I think your feet will be very happy in a pair of these…

Will you be sliding into a pair of flat mules any time soon? If so, how are you going to wear them? If you’re way ahead of the trends and have been rocking them for a while, do you think Gucci’s responsible for the flat mule phenomenon? If you absolutely despise these, that’s cool too. No matter how you feel, LET IT OUT IN THE COMMENTS.
