The Perfect Tuck

Ah, the hair tuck — the beauty version of a coat draped over your shoulders. You think one of two things when you see such tucking — 1) WHOA did she get a super short hair cut? 2) she’s too cool / effortless / lazy to let her hair out from under her jacket. Either way, let’s talk about it.

hair tuck

I too am a sucker for the hair tuck because YES, there is something about putting on a sweater, a scarf or a piece of outerwear without taking the extra step of actually taking your hair out from under said garment…that makes you look SO DAMN CHIC.

It really is that je ne sais quoi that if you don’t already have, you will…once you master the hair tuck.

First step — the hair. You can’t have perfectly Kardashian / Victoria’s Secret model hair for this look. It needs to be a bit undone. Using such products that give you that IDGAF vibe will help you get there. A few favorites — Bumble & Bumble CitysweptOribe Dry Texturizing Spray (has been a game changer for me, personally) or any salt spray (I just tried Sachajuan Ocean Mist for the first time…definitely a fan).

Now that you’ve got the hair down. What to wear for the perfect tuck? You can pretty much do this with any sort of outerwear with a collar or “action at the neck.”

I’ve seen coats, and own one myself, that’s not ideal for a hair tuck, as there’s not enough material for to do the tucking…if that makes any sense.

Now that it’s Fall (actually, almost winter) it’s time for turtlenecks and scarves — two perfect options to master that hair tuck.

I actually never thought I could wear turtlenecks because I get a bit claustrophobic having something so constricting, but I’ve found a few over the years that leave enough room between the sweater and the neck, where I can manage. And now…I’m a pretty happy camper because I can do THIS.

And THIS.

It’s the little things, right?

Are you into the hair tuck? Or do you have that jacket-draped-over-shoulders mentality? — like put your arms through the damn arm holes! And take your hair our of your sweater!

Now that you know what to do…if you’re still looking for the perfect piece to get the perfect tuck, these should be able to do just that!
