Under The Sea

Every season, I come across a random trend or two that always surprises me, yet is comforting because it’s reassurance that fashion is indeed fun (i.e. owls and Star Wars). I hope we have some Little Mermaid / Red Lobster fans in the house (which may even be one in the same) because I sea a new trend surfacing…

Yes, you read that correctly.

Kenzo always gives us a bit of humor each season, but for Spring 2014 things were extra…fishy. Whether it be fish prints, just a big ol’ fish on a sweatshirt (I guess fish are the new tigers) or even a “No Fish, No Nothing” statement tee (perhaps the new slogan for the Filet-O-Fish?)…it’s clear Kenzo designers Carol Lim and Humberto Leon were watching way too much Finding Nemo some time last year.

Now it’s not just Kenzo doing the sea-thing for Spring. Wildfox, Charlotte Olympia and Giuseppe Zanotti are just some of the few incorporating this trend. And it’s not just fish — lobster, sea horses, crab and starfish are just a few other critters showing up on our clothes and accessories. Although this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a sea theme…

Tibi must have been ahead of their time — remember that lobster-themed Resort ’13 collection? Same with Anna Wintour — lobster at the Met Gala in 2012. And that Wayne outfit I totally regret not buying last year…

When it comes to these random trends (or “micro trends” if you will) I’m usually on board because they’re fun and quirky. Who wouldn’t want to carry a lobster clutch to dinner (even better if you’re going to a seafood joint)? But that’s just my opinion…

What do you think? Would you wear any of these sea-themed pieces? Any favorites?
