Oh Hey Crochet

I’m all for breaking the rules when it comes to seasons and styles. Suede in summer, pastels in winter, no white after Labor Day, etc. But there are certain things that, for the most part, should only be worn in their designated season…and today we’re going to talk about one of them.

If I saw this outfit (or a piece of it) worn four months from now (and not while on vacation somewhere warm) I would be all like OH HEY [WTF?!] CROCHET or NO WAY CROCHET (something along those lines…) It’s such a lightweight and summery material, it would just look odd (and insanely impractical) in any other season. Not saying it absolutely can’t be done, because I’m sure there’s a way, BUT if you haven’t gotten a chance to get your crochet on this season…it’s time to get on it!

Because summer feels approximately ten minutes long, there’s a lot to squeeze in — sandals, shorts, bra tops, making me jealous of your fabulous Hamptons weekends, sheer everything, swimwear, FESTIVALS (both music and street), AL FRESCO DINING…the list goes on and on. And of course we must add crochet to said list.

When it comes to fashion (and actually food too) I’m all about texture. I love the look of something detailed. I also enjoy mixing different textures — it just adds a little extra something to your outfit. Now crochet can easily look like you’re wearing a coverup or going to a music festival, so styling it in different ways (especially if you’re not going to the beach or Lollapalooza) can give you alternate vibes. Like pairing with leather, oxfords or ankle boots. And just getting creative with layering in general.

Or even trying something that’s not full-on crochet. A little detail goes a long way…

Now what to avoid? I’d stick to neutrals or just not-so-bright crochet pieces (as they can easily look cheap). Shirts, shorts and dresses are good ideas. Pants and jumpsuits…not so much (mostly when they look like this).

For designers, Zimmermann and Self-Portrait seem to be consistently on-point with their crochet pieces. And if you are looking to take your crochet to the water, She Made Me gets two thumbs up emojis for sure.

And if that’s not enough, you can shop the most badass crochet pieces on the Internet (well at least as badass as crochet can possibly be) below. Do you say yes way or no way to crochet? Do you agree it’s very seasonal or would you rock it in fall / winter? Regardless of the season, how do YOU crochet?
