The Fray

Everyone loves denim, right? Whether you live in that one pair of skinny jeans or pile on as much denim as possible…we can all relate to this material in some way. But when the styles get stale, what’s a girl to do? Well, let’s add some fray into the mix.

frayed denim

Frayed denim has been around forever. Whether you rock it on purpose or on accident (as I did in middle school / high school when my flares were too long and I just let them drag on the ground…even my Steve Madden flatforms couldn’t help me there), it’s a small detail that gives a chill vibe…which I’m all about.

I’ve mentioned in a few posts before that I’ve never been the biggest denim fan (although three of my last five personal style posts beg to differ). I typically wear leather pants or black jeans (which has been changing as of late…sort of, hence this post) but I do have a ton of jeans and I now wear them pretty often. Ever since the boyfriend jean came about (and finally stopped looking like this), that’s when I started to enjoy denim that wasn’t necessarily gray or black (but I am still on the hunt for the perfect black boyfriend jeans, FYI!) Then the girlfriend jean happened, as well as relaxed skinnies and flares. Now I feel pretty comfortable outside my dark denim comfort zone…but it really all came together after I found these the other week.

…which I just realized I’ve posted on Instagram three times in seven days (and I’ve probably worn them more than that but just didn’t share all over social media). So yeah, you can say I’m into a frayed hem jean right now. Are you?

The most popular styles of frayed hem denim seem to be a super skinny jean. I’m not opposed to skinny jeans, I’m just over them for myself…so finding a semi-relaxed style (re: AMO) was very exciting for me (which is why I’ve been wearing them so damn much).

If you want to take a little more of a fashion risk with your fray, try a cropped flare or even denim culottes. I’d keep the the rest of the look minimal / classic, as you don’t want to appear to be overly trendy. But if done right, you could be a total badass.

Now if you’re one who prefers to DIY this sort of thing, by all means go for it. I’d love to give you some tips but considering I don’t think I’ve ever successfully DIYed anything in my life (remember when I learned avocado does not dissolve in the shower?) I’m the last person you should be taking advice from in that department.

FRAYED DENIM SHIRT

And if frayed jeans aren’t your thing, you can try a variety of styles in the frayed category — jackets, shirts, dresses, you name it…YOU CAN FRAY IT.

If you want to get your fray on with the click of a button / no scissors required (and become one step closer to being Kate Bosworth), then I think I can help you out.
