It’s A Match!

Today’s topic of discussion is no new trend (like Drake saying “no new friends” but replace friends with trends…you feel me?) The matching set is something our mothers wore back in the day, when people actually bought “outfits.” Then for so long, any sort of matching looked like you were trying too hard (especially if there’s any pairing of a red bag with red shoes…something I despise to this day). Now there’s this new way of matching, and it seems to be sticking around for quite a while.

The idea of a matching set is awesome because it literally requires no thinking. You don’t have to debate what pants to wear with what top — YOU JUST WEAR THEM TOGETHER. But the even more beautiful thing about them is that you don’t always have to wear them together. I realize it might seem traumatic to ever break them apart, but look what happens when you do!

The possibilities are endless, friends.

PRINTED MATCHING SET

Another bonus is that some of these matching sets can give you the illusion of a jumpsuit…without the difficulty of taking it off to go to the bathroom (that struggle is REAL).

If I haven’t sold you on the positives, yet…just like an As Seen on TV commercial…BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. I’ve never found an easier trend where there’s actually more options in the look-for-less category. ASOS has the best selection of what they call twosies and most of it is under $100. Literally, that outfit I’m wearing below (top and shorts together) was $96. And I just found out they’re both still available (and on sale) so you can get the whole thing for $44!! So it’s ideal for those who want to give it a try but don’t want to spend a month’s rent on it.

It seems like printed matching sets were happening for a while, and they still are, but now we’re moving in a more minimalist monochromatic matching set look…which I am ALL about.

The one thing I’m really over in the matching set category is the fitted cropped shirt with a fitted skirt. Kim Kardashian sort of ruined that look by wearing it what seemed like everyday for a few months (blame Kanye) BUT good news…there’s so many other ways to rock a matching set, you won’t need to look like Kim K to do so.

For Fall / Winter, we have suits and long sleeve tops + pants if we want to embrace this trend. For summer, a matching tank / shorts set is ideal (or if you still want to do the crop top and skirt thing…maybe take note from Tay instead of K). But what about spring?

I’d go with a long sleeve jacket and longer shorts, a short sleeve top and pants or even a sweatshirt and a skirt. There are just so many damn good options, I don’t even know where to begin. I’ve already told you all the positives about a matching set, as there are just so many. Are there any negatives though? I guess the only thing I’d be careful of is to not choose one that incorporates other trends. Because this trend teeters on being too trendy (although a trendy trend that’s lasted quite some time, which is rare for such a trend…should I just keep saying TREND, FRIEND?) I would avoid things like pairing your matching set with gladiator sandals (not because they’re trendy but because they’re ugly…okay fine, both), or anything else that just seems very…2015.

So now that I’ve told you I’m down with a matching set, the question is…are you? If so, here’s some of my favorites happening right now (a lot of these pieces are under $100…so you can get your matching set on AND have enough money to wear it to that new fancy restaurant that’s prix fixe only). If not, tell me in the comments why you prefer to mix rather than match.
